The first 25 braille letters, up through the first half of the 3rd decade, transcribe a–z (skipping w). In English Braille, the rest of that decade is rounded out with the ligatures and, for, of, the, and with. Omitting dot 3 from these forms the 4th decade, the ligatures ch, gh, sh, th, wh, ed, er, ou, ow and the letter w. Braille letters are unique, making it easy for beginners to learn and apply to grade 1 braille (uncontracted braille). The braille alphabet is standardised for most countries, although abbreviations and punctuation can vary. Braille numbers

Hand-held optical magnifiers are available with built-in lighting from a bulb or LED to help illuminate the area being viewed. Some are available with lighting of different colour temperatures. These colour temperatures are described in Kelvin or K. A lower number (e.g. 2,700K) emits a more yellow light, a higher number (e.g. 6,000K) emits a whiter light. Most push-button telephone keypads have a raised dot on the central five key to help orientate a user relying on touch. Some of the phones in this group have a number of 'one-touch' memory buttons that dial stored telephone numbers. Thus the word but is contracted to the single letter b, can to c, do to d, and so on. Even this simple rule creates issues requiring special cases; for example, d is, specifically, an abbreviation of the verb do; the noun do representing the note of the musical scale is a different word and must be spelled out.

The dots make up braille cells, each symbolising a letter, word, or punctuation mark. Embossed Braille Keyboards: Embossed Braille keyboards are traditional input devices with six raised Braille dots per key. Users press combinations of these keys to input Braille characters. These keyboards are widely used in Braille literacy education and are suitable for producing tactile Braille documents.
