Description

As might be expected, the D500 stands out from the D7200 and D300S in almost every way. Performance improvements include a very fast top frame rate with a huge buffer. The metering module is very high resolution compared to the older cameras and is also far more capable in low light. On paper, at least it has 3 stops greater sensitivity.

One of the other big features Nikon is touting is its Snapbridge system that uses Bluetooth LE (a low-power variant of Bluetooth also known as Bluetooth Smart), and Wi-Fi to maintain a connection between the camera and a smart device. This includes the ability to auto-transfer images from the camera, as well as initiating the Wi-Fi connection for remote shooting or manual image transfer. Context There are three very obvious factors that differentiate the D5 from the D500: sensor size, camera size and price. But looking past those, the two are remarkably alike. Notice how many of the features in the table above are common to both. It is not a comprehensive list by any means, but does pretty well illustrate the shared raison d’être of these two cameras. In recent years it has been a very frustrating fact that, as a Nikon user, the only way to get a really high speed camera was to get a D4 or D4s. There has been no affordable alternative since the D300/D300s until now. Reddish Egret (white morph) – Nikon D500, 600mm f/4, ISO 900 1/3200s f/5.6 Nikon D500 vs Mirrorless Competition More third-party APS-C autofocus lenses for Nikon Z-mount coming soon: TTArtisan 35mm f/1.8, Meike 55mm f/1.4 and Sirui Sniper 23mm+33mm+56mm f/1.2For my photography, I consider vertical grips essential and shooting the D500 vertically without one is something I find to be quite awkward to the point where I shoot less verticals, which is not a good thing. Equipment should not dictate the kind of pictures taken. So the MB-D17 goes on and stays there. As a bonus, you can load an extra battery to help with “range anxiety”. Having to remove the vertical grip to get at the in-body battery is a small annoyance that comes with using the accessory grip. I always set the camera to use the MB-D17 battery first which often means at the end of the day there is no need to remove the primary battery for charging. Recommended Camera and Menu Settings The issue with 3rd party batteries was different than the issue with the Nikon Li-ion20 variant. When the D500 came out, prior 3rd party batteries did not work at all in the D500 whereas the older Nikon batteries had a shorter half-life (I had an older 3rd party battery that came free with a D7200 which didn't work at all in the D500). The non-Nikon battery manufacturers subsequently modified their design and these batteries now work in the D500. I know because B&H gave me a free non-Nikon battery when I bought my D500 and it works the same as the Li-ion20 variant Nikon battery as far as I can tell. A new feature that Nikon is trumpeting is its SnapBridge connection to smartphones or tablets. This is designed to get around the limitations of current Wi-Fi implementations by maintaining a permanent connection between the camera and smart device using Bluetooth, switching to the more power-hungry Wi-Fi only when required for transferring high-resolution images or remotely controlling the camera. Part of the idea here is that the camera can automatically transfer every picture you take to your phone (and then to Nikon’s cloud-sharing service, if you like) without needing the Wi-Fi to be turned on all the time.

Nikon D300s:Announced 2009. 12 megapixels, 7 FPS (8 with grip), 51 autofocus points. First camera in the series to have video MB-D17 battery type set to LR6/AA Alkaline (the other options are HR6/AA-Ni-MH and FR6/Lithium) - I'm using one of the EN-EL15 batteries in this and the MB-D17 battery is used first, then the body's battery. You should be looking for the Nikon EN-EL15 with an additional label that says "Li-Ion20:, or with an EN-EL15 with a suffix. Any suffixed EN-EL15 will do, for instance EN-EL15a, EN-EL15b etc. Although the D500 doesn’t have a full metal body like the D5, its metal chassis is more durable than that of the old D300S. The degree of sealing is greater, too, so the camera can be used in harsher conditions. Nikon has also omitted a pop-up flash to make the camera sturdier, and the hotshoe is protected with a weatherproof seal. The Nikon D500 did a good job of balancing the exposure in this high contrast scene. But given the tendency of the Nikon D500’s autofocus to occasionally search for focus and the fact that seabirds might fly into and out of the scene, I thought manual focus would work better here.

Specifications

The D300 underwent a relatively minor refresh with the D300S in 2009, but after that Nikon seemed to abandon the idea, insisting that its D7000-series of enthusiast-focused DSLRs met the needs of the majority of enthusiasts. But in 2016 Nikon relented and, just in time for a summer of European Championship football and the Olympic Games, produced a genuine successor in the shape of the D500, alongside the professional Nikon D5, and with an astonishing set of specifications that are still impressive today. In recent years, photographers looking for a truly high-end APS-C DSLR for sports and action shooting have been more or less limited to Canon’s EOS 7D Mark II and perhaps the later EOS 90D. But with the D500, Nikon returned to this sector in fine style, and its combination of superb autofocus, fast continuous shooting and excellent image quality places it very much at the top of the list.

PS .... If any of you guys use a third party grip are there any particular makes that you`d recommend Autofocus is less speedy when using Live View but it’s unlikely that you’ll be using Live View to shoot action.Whether you’re capturing a cheetah on the run or the pivotal moment in the X Games, the D500 will get you the shot. And not just any shot. If you’re encountering the Nikon D500 for the first time, what you need to know is that it’s a high-speed, advanced-tier camera mainly intended for sports and wildlife photographers. The D500 takes its place at the top of the Nikon APS-C (“crop sensor”) format camera body lineup as a true flagship model and as the undisputed, long-dreamed-of replacement for the D300S. There is no question that the D500 is meant to be viewed as, and perform as, a mini-D5. Consider the naming of the two, the simultaneous announcements, the new auto-focus system common to both, the use of XQD memory cards in both cameras, and even the identical resolution 21MP sensors, among many other commonalities. Quite frankly, on paper, the D500 looks like a dream. And clearly, I’m not the only one thinking that – the camera was sold out for a while after it was released.

In 2017 I wanted a new charger because the original was doing things that made me feel uncomfortable. Since it was out of warranty and I desired a dual charger that I could use in my car, I bought the item linked below. However, it is all dependent on your budget and use of the grip, I have the following D7000 3rd Party Grip (Newer) Far to sloppy on my D7000 It feels fine when it is tightened onto the camera but it needs to be tightened up on a regular basis, a total waste of time, if you were out for a full day, feels cheap, buttons are not good a very loose feel to them and not a very tactile feel then moved to the meika a little better mainly because of the metal parts but still not that good button wise buttons got a bit of a sloppy feel to them after a couple of thousand presses.
