the dash to the finish line, the Vanquish Mips® shapes the wind to work for you. Features Hardshell With In-Mold hardbody™ Lower Wrap Details The Vanquish Mips® is the pinnacle of high-performance road-cycling helmets, featuring the innovative TransformAir design that actively streamlines airflow to reduce drag.

The Roc Loc system fully encompasses the head and allows you to adjust to the perfect fit with three different height levels and a twisting dial that adjusts to the circumference needed allowing the Vanquish to sit trouble-free.

Lastly, the colour I tested – matte Glacier – was not to my liking but the other five options are all quite appealing, especially the one Giro calls ‘Dazzle’.

There is one issue I have with the Vanquish and whilst it might be relatively trivial to many it is the proverbial fly in the ointment for me. The looks. When it first arrived, the squared off shaping and awkward split personality styling reminded me of a Horseshoe Crab (look it up). Not the most beautiful of creatures. It comes with MIPS spherical tech, and features 15 ventilation openings for natural cooling. Inside you'll find antimicrobial Ionic + cushioning for absorbing sweat and maintaining comfort, while the whole thing can be adjusted with the brand's Roc Loc 5 Air system. In our testing, we found the Vanquish to be exactly what Giro promised us – a much cooler helmet. Giro claims that it is near the Synthe in terms of cooling and in our (fairly nonscientific) head test, we felt it was a claim that at the very least passed our test. The Vanquish is surprisingly cool, even with the shield on. The two small vents above the eyes allow a surprising amount of air to circulate over your face. We even found ourselves questioning if this was just our imagination or some sort of placebo effect. But even a few hours into a mid-July ride in Florida, we still didn’t feel the need to just let our head air out. We rode both with and without the shield, and honestly we found we preferred the shield on. The ventilation was that good, and the unobstructed view beat even some of the sunglasses we routinely ride with. You would get lower drag by switching to the Aerohead Ultimate MIPS, according to Giro, but that's a time trial helmet with an extended tail.year-old Jo Jobson due to be sentenced on Wednesday for his part in armed robbery of Cavendish and his wife, Peta, at their home in Essex in November 2021

Four generously sized indentations are also positioned on the underside of the front of the helmet — in between the expanded polystyrene liner and your forehead — to help bring in more cooling air, especially around the browpad to help prevent sweat from dripping down into your face. The optics and tint of the Carl Zeiss made visor are pretty spot on. Despite the large curvature distortion is almost at zero, only noticeable at the very edge of your peripheral vision. Tint wise, it works in a wide range of light conditions but will struggle on very overcast days or when riding roads with large tree cover. The Vanquish plays well with normal eyewear so you don't have to use the visor if you so wish. But be careful with it, in Giro's infinite wisdom they do no not supply a protective carry bag for it. We’re unable to verify Giro’s claims, but 25mph is nearly twice as fast as I’d ride 160km. However, there is the argument – put forward by aerodynamicist Dan Bigham and others – that aerodynamics matter to slower cyclists at lower speeds even more, due to the extended duration out on the asphalt. Incredibly, former Cyclist digital editor Joe Robinson did not learn to ride a bike until the age of 14 as he used to skateboard so had no interest in getting a bike. Now onto those aero claims. The Vanquish MIPS, with the shield visor in place, scored very highly in our own independent wind-tunnel testing in 2019, consistently up there with the Specialized Evade 2 across a range of yaw angles and speeds.

During riding, the helmet ventilates well, with the cold days even too well, for hot days where there is a lot of climbing, I would personally choose a more open helmet because the helmet ventilates less well, until you make enough speed in the descent. Seven premium colourways are available to match any style or preference. Visually, the Syntax looks aggressive, with 25 large vents that provide both an aerodynamic and cooling effect. Let Giro shape the wind for you, whether you’re going for your base mileage or leading the front in an Ironman course, thanks to the Vanquish MIPS Aero Helmet. Speaking of the shield, it’s perhaps worth noting that this was the first time I’d donned a helmet-mounted lens that I actually liked. The field of view is expansive both above and off to the sides, there’s almost no distortion — my biggest complaint with other shields I’ve tried — and the fancy Zeiss tint seemed to work as advertised. Lighting conditions that day ranged from bright sun to heavily overcast skies, and the standard grey tint was perfectly agreeable throughout.
