Description

The story is what art should be about, it’s how art should be taught. Given that many children have negative experiences that discourage them from expressing themselves creatively, maybe they’ll at least come across this book and get inspired again. In this book, a youngster who is convinced she can’t draw is given encouragement by her teacher, and then passes on what she’s been given.

The Dot - Peter H. Reynolds - Twinkl

Think of different types of art materials that can be used to make a dot. Can you try them all? How are they similar / different? Which is your favourite? Why? I received this product free for the purpose of reviewing it. I received no other compensation for this review. The opinions expressed in this review are my personal, honest opinions. Your experience may vary. Please read my full disclosure policy for more details. It seems this book has been reviewed by a lot of adults who haven't actually read it to children. There are a lot of "this book is a good reminder for children and adults" or "kids today . . ." This review is for someone who is looking to read this book to their child, not just as a novelty.

However, if Dot inspires one parent to turn away from their screen and play with their child (and I hope it does for hundreds of people) then it is worth it's weight in gold and jewels. Vashti goes from being a sad and angry child, with no confidence, to someone who has the maturity and ability to help someone else to believe in themselves.

Vashti experiments with different colours. Can you try to mix colours to make new ones? Make a chart that shows what happens when you mix different groups of colours together. Look at the different-sized pieces of paper that you might use for art. Can you measure the dimensions? Can you work out the areas and perimeters of each? The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds is thought-provoking and allows children to explore the idea that everyone has to start somewhere. The teacher smiles gently and encourages Vashti to just make a mark. In a rage Vashti grabs a felt-tip pen and jabs the paper.

Many times, however, a person's own dot book will contain their own specialized shorthand to represent their location on the field. Dot books can vary from simple (providing only the location of the marcher) to complex (also providing the location of nearby marchers whom you are guiding). This poses problems when players are switched between positions on the field: switching dot books is often difficult and many times players end up rewriting their dot books. International Dot Day is celebrated by both adults and children all around the world as a way of boosting confidence and encouraging creativity, through observing this holiday, people can learn the power of creativity and how just one small dot can make a huge impact on the world around them. Are you looking for ways to spark your students’ creativity? Take a look at some of our favourite artistic resources: The Dot speaks to the choice teachers have to either crush or inspire their students in creative pursuits. I hope that when I become a teacher (and that day is getting closer and closer!) I always choose to say the right words at the right time, and not let my bad days and sure-to-be-overworked nerves hinder me from encouraging my students to reach their potential, achieve their personal best, and be happy.

Do you really think you can’t do it, or is it just that it is difficult and needs practise to become better? The creativity in each of us needs encouraging. I truly know that. From just a word, a push, a smile, blossoms can bloom. It is not just about drawing or painting either. Writing, sculpting, playing a musical instrument, weaving, any form of art can show up with just that nudge.

Find a Scheme of Work

This is an attractive book. The author hand lettered the text and illustrated the book with watercolor, ink, and tea. Yes, tea! Painting with tea is so clever! I like modern art and I enjoyed the illustrations. This is a nice story about trying something new. Just because you think you can't do something doesn't mean you're right. Vashti found that out in a fun and colourful way, and managed to pass on the message to someone else who needed to hear it. Hopefully, readers of the book can do the same. Vashti says that she can’t draw. Has there ever been a time when you thought that you couldn’t do something? How did you overcome it?
