Description

This is a stylized film and its two very different “worlds” exhibited excellent depth and dimension. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.

Hopefully work of mouth will bring this fantastic flick back into the public's eye and redeem it's theatrical sales. He’s been everywhere from Oscar winning in his younger days, to a dramatic nut bag in his aging years, but he still knows how to play the audience like a fiddle and give them what they want. WB may have appeared to have scrimped on this 4K transfer but the results speak for themselves and its an upgrade on both the video and audio fronts (even if that last little bit of wonderful low end found on the previous soundtrack hasn’t made its way over to this release). The time-loop at its centre is a wonderful conceit – a disgraced war journalist (Tom Cruise) is sent to the front line of a massive beachfront assault against a horde of invading aliens, only to die horribly drenched in the blood of one of the tentacled nasties. This boost in the overall darkness of the film could have caused real problems for its notoriously dark final act, yet the image never felt crushed, nor overtly dense. In his role in “Edge of Tomorrow”, Paxton just chews and chews the scenery in a way that can only be compared to Peter Stormaire, as the over the top Sergeant from Science Hill, Kentucky.

In throwing us into the middle of the story with little snippets of Cruise's Cage already in promo mode, it allows the A-list actor to just do his smug but charming shtick he is famous for, and Cruise's go-to act works to the plot's benefit. Yet the moment that he dies in gruesome fashion, he wakes up at the beginning of the day, forced to live through it over again. He’s been a reliably consistent box office draw since he paired sunglasses with socks and skivvies, manages his projects as wisely as anyone in his league, and even his detours into arty indulgence—or, as in the case of Interview with the Vampire and Rock of Ages, ludicrous miscasting—have performed better than reasonable expectation.

It just feels like it misses just a tad on the very end of the explosion when things dip down sub 25hz for a second or two. On top of that, while I thought it was a great torture test for subwoofers, it was overpowering and certainly capable of damaging systems that weren’t up to the challenge. Trying harder to make up for his lack of height in some Freudian sort of way, I don’t know, but whatever it is Tom is still a lot of fun to watch on the big screen. The Bold New Take on The Beloved Classic “The Color Purple” Debuts on 4K, Blu-ray and DVD March 12th! Every scene he’s in is made better, just watching him and even Tom speaks behind the scenes about Bill being a fantastic goof to work with.Based on the Japanese sci-fi light novel All You Need Is Kill, the film takes place a dozen or two years in the future.
