The sheer brilliance of the better known Antellects ‘Love Slave’ as atmospheric a soul dancer as was ever cut and deserving of its thousands of pounds price tag; nobody quibbles with that. The lesser-known Inconquerables single should have been dubbed as by the Unobtainables so few are its sightings. For instance he also found the original master tape to Ty Karim's super-rarity You Just Don't Know that Ty's husband Kent Harris had lovingly looked after while awaiting a proper deal for the licensing of his superb Romark label. So now listen to the clarity of that cascading piano, crisp cymbal work, haunting organ and Ty's fabulous, rich, deep brown vocals on a song that epitomises all that's good about mid-60s, soul-soaring music. For dancers who enjoy varied Northern soul tempii. Must hears include Johnnie Taylor’s Friday Night on Southern Stax 1970 and big-voiced Difosco (aka Dee Irvin/Big Dee Irwin) on Sunshine Love." High-quality dance records from across the Northern Soul spectrum – floor-fillers, chin-strokers, the esoteric and the sometimes obvious. Turning tradition on its head and commencing with an ‘ender’, and a side that was first spun by Randy Cozens at the very early 6T’s sessions and also championed by Eddie Hubbard via his Slow And Deep column in Shades Of Soul, Dan Folger’s – The Way Of The Crowd is a real gem. Well-produced, heavy on sentiment and nostalgia it is a positive delight of strings…things…and everything else that makes for a resplendent and emotive big beat ballad. First time on CD too.

Kent Records latest release Northern Soul's Classiest Rarities Volume 7 Cd is out today, The seventh in this long running series hits the streets running, with a right old varied mix of styles rarities and classics. The relatively common ‘Wrong, Wrong, Wrong’ by Ray & Dave is flavour of the year again, as is the Ballads’ ‘Butterfly’. ‘That Same Old Feeling’ is a quality Detroit 45 by the Volumes which could have been conceived for this compilation, like the less-pricey but equally wonderful ‘Two Loves Have I’ by R&B giant Big Joe Turner. R&B Punker – THE BRITISH WALKERS – Diddley Daddy [EQ] – PYE INT 7N 25298 UK 1965 Mr Dynamite Sue GrpIn the crowded marketplace of northern soul compilations, the release of a new volume in Kent’s Classiest Rarities series still manages to turn the heartbeat up. For obsessive connoisseurs and occasional dabblers alike, this is as satisfying a soul collection as you’ll find." ★★★★★ The "Classiest Rarities" series tries to represent all the facets of the Northern Soul collector's world and to us the little nuggets that we play at home are just as valuable as the monsters that draw dancers to the floor like moths to a flame. Records like Danny White's Miss Fine, Miss Fine on the Frisco label out of New Orleans are within most people's spending limits but are as downright dirty and soulful as this music gets. Having Isaac Hayes and David Porter write and produce the single in Memphis undoubtedly made the session happen and Danny rose to the occasion. In a similar bag is Billy Keen's smoother soul sound I Finally Got Wise cut for Galaxy and featuring the sort of big Ray Shanklin arrangement that Cliff Goldsmith used to such success on Little Johnnie Taylor's recordings.
