And strive (jahidoo ) for Allah with the striving (jihadihi ) due to him. He has chosen you and has not placed upon you in the religion any difficulty. Further information: Nonresistance §Christian theology Blessed are the Peacemakers (1917) by George Bellows Peace churches [ edit ] The contrast with Jesus could not be sharper. Jesus said “love your enemies”– a statement found nowhere in the teaching of Islam. Jesus never killed anyone, and criticised Peter for taking up a sword in his defence. Instead of killing and maiming, Jesus healed people and even raised some from the dead. Teaching of religious leaders Ceadel, Martin (1996). The Origins of War Prevention: The British Peace Movement and International Relations, 1730–1854. Oxford University Press. ISBN 978-0198226741. RfPUK invites religious leaders as our Patrons to direct and help us to advance our efforts towards common action in a multi-faith environment.

In light of the common criticism of pacifism as not offering a clear alternative policy, one approach to finding "more effective ways" has been the attempt to develop the idea of "defence by civil resistance", also called " social defence". This idea, which is not necessarily dependent on acceptance of pacifist beliefs, is based on relying on nonviolent resistance against possible threats, whether external (such as invasion) or internal (such as coup d'état). This doctrine of abrogation enables apparent contradictions in the Qur’an to be resolved; later verses abrogate earlier ones. Furthermore, Muhammad did not advocate violence earlier in his career, but waited until he had amassed a following large enough to wage war. Earlier verses are thus more peaceful, while later verses are more violent. Here it is clear that physical fighting is regarded as the greater endeavour. All four schools of Sunni jurisprudence, as well as the Shi’ite tradition make no reference to a ‘greater jihad’. There are multiple references to jihad in the most trusted hadith collections and with virtually no exceptions, they all refer to physical fighting. For example: Hochschild, Adam, To end all wars: a story of loyalty and rebellion, 1914–1918, p. 277, Boston: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2011, ISBN 0618758283 War and International Justice: a Kantian perspective by Brian Orend. Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press, 2000. ISBN 0889203377 pp.145–146The Lemba religion of southern French Congo, along with its symbolic herb, is named for pacifism: " lemba, lemba" (peace, peace), describes the action of the plant lemba-lemba ( Brillantaisia patula T. Anders). [18] Likewise in Cabinda, " Lemba is the spirit of peace, as its name indicates." [19] Moriori [ edit ]

Ahmadiyya claims its objective to be the peaceful propagation of Islam with special emphasis on spreading the true message of Islam by the pen. Ahmadis point out that as per prophecy, who they believe was the promised messiah, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, rendered the concept of violent jihad unnecessary in modern times. They believe that the answer of hate should be given by love. [133] Many Muslims consider Ahmadi Muslims as either kafirs or heretics, an animosity sometimes resulting in murder. [134] [135] [136] Jainism [ edit ] RfPUK is committed to advancing effective multi-religious cooperation for Peace on global, regional, national and local levels while ensuring that the religious communities organised on these same levels assume and exercise appropriate leadership and ownership of these efforts. Our missionAfter the immense loss of nearly ten million men to trench warfare, [52] a sweeping change of attitude toward militarism crashed over Europe, particularly in nations such as Great Britain, where many questioned its involvement in the war. After World War I's official end in 1918, peace movements across the continent and the United States renewed, gradually gaining popularity among young Europeans who grew up in the shadow of Europe's trauma over the Great War. Organizations formed in this period included the War Resisters' International, [53] the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, the No More War Movement, the Service Civil International and the Peace Pledge Union (PPU). The League of Nations also convened several disarmament conferences in the interbellum period such as the Geneva Conference, though the support that pacifist policy and idealism received varied across European nations. These organizations and movements attracted tens of thousands of Europeans, spanning most professions including "scientists, artists, musicians, politicians, clerks, students, activists and thinkers." [54] Great Britain [ edit ] Between the two World Wars [ edit ] The soldiers of the Red Army in Russia, who on religious grounds refused to shoot at the target (evangelicals or Baptists). Between 1918 and 1929 Toye, R. (1 January 2001). "The Labour Party and the Economics of Rearmament, 1935–39". But it is also the case that the majority of Muslims are unfamiliar with the teaching of the Qur’an and the life of Muhammad. They are not usually encouraged to read the Qur’an in a language they can understand. Many Muslims self-identify as such because of culture, birth or relationships. Therefore if we critique the teaching of their religion, we are not thereby criticising the behaviour or beliefs of every adherent of Islam. The United Pentecostal Church, the largest Apostolic/ Oneness denomination, takes an official stand of conscientious objection: its Articles of Faith read, "We are constrained to declare against participating in combatant service in war, armed insurrection... aiding or abetting in or the actual destruction of human life. We believe that we can be consistent in serving our Government in certain noncombatant capacities, but not in the bearing of arms."
