Batman manages to escape his bonds and take out Two-Face's thugs, but not before they accidentally activate the dynamite's detonator. Collecting issues written by crime novelist Max Allan Collins, Batman: Second Chances takes something of a back-to-basics approach with the character.

Overall, the stories are surprisingly well written and mature for the time period (and still good today). Featuring writing by Max Allan Collins, Jim Starlin and Jo Duffy, Batman: Second Chances covers the retooled origin of the character that was sorely missing from his 1983 debut. Seeing him adopt a child immediately after losing one was a very big challenge on us as a reader, because on one side you fall for Jason Todd's wittiness and spunk, but on the other side you mourn the loss of Dick.

The Dark Knight sees Jason’s potential to be a hero-as well as the rage and revenge that torment him. A woman Bruce Wayne meets becomes his next victim, which sparks his drive to find and take down the man. However, before they can start, thugs suddenly burst in and start firing machine guns into the room. We all know what happens to Jason Todd and he's become a cool character in his own right, but what does he mean to Batman? When Batman goes into action on his own and meets a young hoodlum named Jason Todd, he’s determined to guide Jason away from a life of crime.

We eventually get a confrontation between Batman and Nightwing, resolving all the unspoken tension that started when Grayson was let go. I can't help but wonder if a crisis event or something similar happened in between those, allowing us to get this new and improved origin story. I decided to give Jason Todd another look with the purchase of this collection of stories from the late 80s. The collection features all of DC Comics’ most famous heroes including Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman - the most famous superheroes in the world. The final Starlin/Aparo episode, "White, Gold and Truth" is the crown jewel -- the entire collection is worth owning just for this issue.Though many know how he died with the story Death in the Family being in print for many years, the stories of how he became so unpopular that fans voted him to his death are less widely read. I prefer the Nightwing: Year One version of Dick being fired, but I do like the overall consistency in that Batman just wants to keep him safe. report information) Pencils Denys Cowan (signed as Cowan) Inks Dick Giordano (signed as Giordano) Colors Anthony Tollin Letters ? Nowhere near as weighed down by unnecessary romantic conflict like the issues before it and I loved seeing Jason's joy at being Robin. I did a final comic-book script about my Mime character that was never produced, but I turned it into a BATMAN short story.Batman was reasonably violent and Batman even made mistakes--and I'm not talking I-created-this-villain-because-of-my-mask stupid psychological shit. His graphic novel Road to Perdition is the basis of the Academy Award-winning film starring Tom Hanks, directed by Sam Mendes. When Dick confronts Bruce about hiring another child sidekick, Bruce tries to give the run around before ultimately admitting that he missed Dick. Collins’ opening two-issue arc focuses on ex-cop Tommy Carma, who has developed an unhealthy obsession with Batman, leading to the man dressing and behaving as the hero. The very simple explanation of why he recruited Jason, because he missed Dick is good enough justification for me.

It was clear that DC editorial wasn’t as sure what they wanted to do with Batman post-Crisis as with Superman and Wonder Woman. During the wide shot of Two-Face hanging from the ledge before losing his grip, his left hand opens fully. But when a bullet fired from the Joker’s gun nearly clips Robin’s wings for good, their partnership is severed, and Batman resumes his war on crime alone. In some respects, Second Chances forms the first of a "Replacement Robin" trilogy that continues in Batman: Death In The Family and Batman: A Lonely Place of Dying. and then two issues later he's offering a random kid who's significantly younger than Dick and has little/no training a cape? There was a lot of good stuff back then, including the precursor to the Frank Miller "dark" reboot, prefigured in much of this earlier material. But while Jason shows great potential to be a hero, he is also a troubled young man, consumed with bitterness and anger.
