The consistency of Covaplus is ideal, providing an effortless application without the need for thinning. Plus, it offers flexibility when used on plaster, where it can be watered down as a mist-coat before using it straight from the tin for the top coats. I frequently use Valspar Tough Matt for various projects, and it’s never failed to deliver a pleasing result. The paint provides great coverage and a pretty flat finish, emitting a lovely white glow that is certain to brighten any room. It’s also worth noting that I’ve never experienced any issues with flaking off, though it’s not the ideal choice for new plaster. If you are looking for a higher sheen finish or are looking to paint a bathroom or kitchen using a white emulsion, then an acrylic eggshell finish will be the best option. Acrylic eggshell paints have higher durability than matt finishes and are moisture resistant, meaning they can withstand the high condensation conditions of kitchens and bathrooms. If you’re looking for a cheaper alternative to Johnstone’s One Coat, Dulux Once Matt could be a great choice. This water-based emulsion has been specially developed to ensure a one-coat coverage on walls and ceilings in a fraction of the time needed to redecorate with standard interior paint.

As always, the way you paint will depend on which emulsion you have at hand but there are a few tips you can follow to get that perfect, modern finish. A large number of emulsion paints can be mixed in almost any colour, meaning there is no need to colour a white emulsion paint yourself. It is possible to tint emulsion paint yourself, although we do not recommend this as this will impact the quality of the paint. Ultimately finding the right paint for you and having it mixed in a colour of your choice is the best option. Q. Is emulsion paint water-based? Johnstone’s Covaplus Vinyl Matt is a trustworthy white emulsion paint for walls that has consistently impressed me with its excellent quality and affordability. It delivers the same high standard as Tikkurila’s vinyl matt, yet comes at half the price. The impressive coverage, with two coats generally sufficing no matter the original shade, makes this a practical choice for any decorating job. It’s not the most durable paint on the market so really I would only recommend using it on ceilings but if that’s what you want it for, it’s well worth the money. All of the paints we will discuss in this guide are trade paints. You may be asking what exactly is a trade paint? Well, all major paint manufacturers have both a retail and a trade version of their emulsion paints. The trade paint version of these emulsions are higher quality, offer better opacity, are more durable and achieve a professional finish. Some white emulsions aren’t as good-looking as others but are way more durable and can withstand up to 10,000 scrubs. Covaplus is an unbeatable choice for achieving a consistent, pleasing look throughout your home. This white emulsion paint is not just about exceptional finish and durability, but also about providing value for money, making it my go-to choice for my own projects. Supercover delivers remarkable coverage, capable of completely transforming dark hues with just two coats. I’ve personally used it to cover dark red and blue walls with ‘Swansong,’ an off-white shade, and the results were phenomenal. Opacity is truly top-notch, which contributes to its powerful coverage capabilities.

Unwanted Food or Drink Products - Once supply conditions are broken, there are a number of factors outside of our control that can affect the quality of a product. Therefore perishable goods such as food and drink cannot be returned. I’ve tried plenty of retail paints out of curiosity and the consistency is usually so watery that it’s a nightmare to apply with all the splashes. Of course, because it’s so watered down, it can sometimes take 6 coats to cover dark colours.

On the other hand, if I’m painting over lighter colours, I would go with Covaplus because it’s a dream to apply. White Emulsion: Trade or Retail? I always keep this in mind when choosing the right white emulsion for the job. I find that whilst Albany Supercover isn’t the greatest for application, it has superb opacity and covering power which makes it a good choice when painting over dark blues or reds. As briefly touched upon above, buying white emulsion isn’t as straightforward as choosing any old paint and slapping it on your walls and ceilings. Here are some things to consider before buying your paint:

Emulsion paint is a widely referred to term that essentially means a water-based paint designed for interior walls & ceilings that has vinyl or acrylic resins added to it to make it hardwearing. This is in contrast to oil-based paints that are designed for use on woodwork & metal. Emulsion paints come in a range of finishes that vary in level of sheen, or their ability to reflect light. Matt is the least reflective finish and the most popular emulsion paint, with eggshell having slightly more sheen, followed by the mid-sheen finishes of satin and silk, with silk being the mid-sheen finish designed for walls while satin is used on woodwork. Finally, gloss has the most sheen of any paint finish, which is why it is more often than not used on woodwork, although it can be used on interior walls. It is important to note that the more sheen a paint finish has, the more durability it will have, which is why the harder-wearing finishes of satin and gloss are used on woodwork and metal trim that takes more punishment than other surfaces. The Best White Emulsion Paints Any missed spots or touch-ups can be performed after a minimum of four hours without over coating the whole surface; the fresh paint will dry to match the original coat. I use this myself as my go-to ceiling paint and can vouch for its quality at hiding imperfections. Oddly enough, after a couple of coats, it looks as if it hasn’t covered well. But you just need a little bit of patience. As it dries and hardens, the topcoat becomes fuller and more opaque to leave you with a lovely solid finish that doesn’t flash when touching up or when exposed to critical lighting. Whilst the opacity is good, it’s not the best so you will probably need at least 3 coats, especially if you’re covering a darker colour than white but it’s a price worth paying as you’ll avoid problems further down the line. One Coat impresses with an advanced formula that ensures flawless results on all surfaces, including bare walls. It can even seamlessly cover a darker colour on a previously painted wall, which is a rather uncommon feature for a one-coat paint.Whilst the opacity isn’t great, I give Zinsser Permawhite a solid 9/10. It’s resistant to moisture and can be cleaned many times over which makes it the perfect investment for kitchens and bathrooms. You may now be wondering, why would all paint not be trade paint if it is better quality? This is because a retail paint is kept as cheap as possible as the average homeowner does not want to spend more money than needed on decorating, while a trade decorator must achieve a consistently professional finish. Furthermore, a professional decorator is time sensitive as labour costs will significantly increase if they have to apply three coats of paint rather than two. Overall, trade paint offers higher quality for anyone who is willing to pay slightly more. Having said this, the average trade paint costly marginally more than its retail version and significantly less than a designer paint. The Best White Emulsion Paint For Walls & Ceilings Finding the best white emulsion paint can help you totally transform your living space and in some cases even increase the value of your property. They offer a timeless, elegant look and are great for making your rooms look bigger as well as lighter. In my opinion, trade almost always trumps retail paint and that’s why 5 out of the 6 paints I’ve recommended in this guide are trade standard. Trade paint covers in fewer coats, has much better opacity and lasts much longer than retail paint.

Ever since changing over to MacPherson Eclipse, there’s nothing else I’d consider using. Tikkurila AR2 is a quality white ceiling paint but it’s just too expensive considering Eclipse does the same job. For reasons of hygiene and safety, personal grooming products, cosmetics or items of intimate clothing cannot be returned. My top tip: best results are achieved with proper preparation and the use of a quality roller – I personally recommend the Hamilton microfibre 12-15”. If you have messy children or excited dogs in the home getting their paws all over your paintwork then it would be a good idea to trade aesthetics for durability. One of the biggest problems with any interior decorating, but especially when using a white emulsion is staining on walls. This is caused by moisture that is leading to discolouration or damp on the wall. Water stains come from a range of sources, including leaking pipes or penetrating damp caused by water ingress on an exterior wall that is soaking through to the interior wall. Stains can also be caused from indoor smoking. Inhibits the growth of mould which is essential if you have moisture issues in your kitchen or bathroom
