He took it with him on a relaxing lakeside fishing trip with Peri ( TV: The Two Doctors) and whilst exploring Ravolox, where he used it in an attempt to protect himself from being stoned. ( TV: The Mysterious Planet) He had it with him when he crash-landed on Lakertya and regenerated. ( TV: Time and the Rani)

Fans have long believed the two were in love, but this is the closest we've come to an admittance of feelings from Sonic himself. Bill Potts grabbed an umbrella in preparation to use as a weapon against what she thought was an intruder in her bathroom. ( TV: The Pilot) The Tenth Doctor used a yellow umbrella to defeat Glutonoid on Phijax IV. ( COMIC: The Glutonoid Menace ) The Seventh Doctor initially carried his previous incarnation's multi-coloured umbrella, at one point clumsily brandishing it as a weapon against the First Rani. He left it behind upon choosing his new outfit. ( TV: Time and the Rani) Neglecting to retrieve it from the Rani's TARDIS after the events on Lakertya, he later realised that he had lost possession of it. Fortunately, the TARDIS wardrobe provided him with a suitable replacement. ( PROSE: The Useful Pile) It has been put to great use within the universe of Doctor Who. One Dalek comic story had the Skaronian rotters using a weapon called a Sonic Pulsator, another story has the Ice Warriors using a sonic cannon to devastating effect. He claimed it had never been drawn, but was unsure if it was actually his. Madame Foster had a sonic pen – in reality, a sonic device powerful enough to cut cables disguised as a fountain pen – which she put to good use in “Partners in Crime.” Sadly, it was this pen that proved to be her undoing, and even the Doctor didn’t seem to want it after her untimely end. He threw it in the bin. A secret compartment in the Doctor's umbrella concealed a vial of Gallifreyan restorative. ( COMIC: The Forgotten)On the other hand, the cane used by the Eleventh Doctor to scan the Teselecta in “Let’s Kill Hitler” is rather swish and beautifully irrelevant. It is an object blessed with lots of style but comparatively little substance as a sonic tool, in that it is a cane that happens to have extra capabilities, rather than being a cane that uses its sonic powers to keep the Doctor steady. Some lines suggest how worried Sonic is about finding Amy, which could just be him looking to help a friend. On the planet Svartos, the Doctor saved himself from slipping off a sheer ice cliff by hanging from his umbrella. ( TV: Dragonfire)
