Description

Eddie is informed in no uncertain terms that he will get Carrie acquitted or pay the price so he enlists the help of ex FBI agent, Gabriel Lake, to help him gather the intel he needs. When Max, an Auschwitz survivor turned Nazi hunter, sees one of his former tormentors, he enlists his nephew Aaron to catch him. Otto Schramm, doctor and contemporary of Mengele, sent Max’s son to the gas chambers and used Max to experiment on Jewish children. But there’s one problem – the world thinks Otto died two years earlier in a car accident. I received a gifted copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review as part of the readalong hosted by Tandem Collective UK. You know what's the worst thing that will happen to you once you finish the last Eddie Flynn book by Steve Cavanagh? Wonder how to cope until the next one!!! 😱😫

😉 Told in multiple timelines alternating from past to present, Lutz documents the sometimes-turbulent friendship between Owen and Luna. Eddie Flynn is approached by fellow lawyer Otto Peltier to defend Carrie Miller in her murder trial, due to start in a few days. Peltier is not a criminal defence lawyer, he specialises in estate law, commercial/property law and the odd divorce. According to Urban Dictionary, the term ride or die used as a verb means “you are willing to do anything for someone you love or someone you really appreciate in your life” or used as a noun, it’s “the person who you stand by in any problem and vice versa.”

From the outside looking in, people are often curious about how close the two are. Maybe it's because people have a hard time gauging platonic relationships between a man and woman. It makes them suspicious. Luna and Owen have been best friends for over a decade. Their bond runs incredibly deep, sometimes to the detriment of others in their lives.

The book, set in 1962, opens in Hamburg with an ageing Auschwitz survivor (Max Weill) trying to persuade his CIA desk analyst nephew Aaron to take on Max’s post war quest to bring Concentration Camp Nazi’s to justice – his expose of a child-murderer Pudulski gained him a Time-Cover feature alongside the (real-life) Wiesenthal. Years later, both Luna and Owen are married to their respective partners. One day, Luna finds Owen’s wife, Irene, shot dead in a cemetery. Who would do such a thing? Luna is absolutely sure Owen wouldn’t do something like that.

Zelfs Eddie Flynn... Everyone has the same questions about best friends Owen and Luna: What binds them together so tightly? Why weren't they ever a couple? And why do people around them keep turning up dead? In this riveting novel from the New York Times bestselling author of The Passenger, every answer raises a new, more chilling question.
