Description

Fresh Ube is purple yam. It originates in the Philippines and is a versatile ingredient in the Filipino kitchen. You can find fresh ube in grocery stores in the US and across Asia. Although you can consume fresh ube, it is best when cooked. Looks stunning every time. And when your loved ones do arrive, this cake will blow them away however you decide to decorate it. With it’s vibrant purple color and fluffy layers, it’s a hit every time. The culinary world is constantly changing, often introducing new and exciting flavors to people everywhere. One such standout ingredient is ube, a bright purple yam from the Philippines. While it’s been a Filipino favorite for years, recently it’s gained international fame, particularly in its extract form. This moist purple yam cake makes one of the best ube desserts. It uses ube extract for an easy ube cake rather than faffing with real ube puree or mashing the purple yams yourself. It’s also a gorgeous purple colour and an ube dream! An ube is a yam. Yams and sweet potatoes get confused all the time, but I think of them in relation to savory potatoes like brown russet potatoes and yukon gold potatoes. These ones are a lot more starchy, whereas yams are creamier (and there's no starchy white residue on your knife when you cut them). Are ube and taro the same thing?

To make this frosting really "ube-ish", I tweaked it a little bit by using some of our favorite Filipino ingredients. Fill the center with ube halaya or ube frosting (or macapuno). You’ll want the height of the filling equal to the height of your dam so your cake doesn’t sag in the middle. Ube jam typically served as is, molded into dishes known as llanera molds. But you can let the jam set in any greased dish as well. Tart molds, small bundt pans, or even ramekins are perfect for small portions. While large pie dishes, loaf pans, or pyrex dishes are great for serving a crowd. Once the halaya is set, they are unmolded, sliced, and served. Make sure to dissolve the sugar completely. A great way to tell if you’ve done this step right is by carefully dipping your finger into the sugar mixture — if you don’t feel any grains of sugar anymore when you rub a small amount of mixture between your fingers, you’re good.Add a bit of violet food dye to ensure the purple color comes through brightly, but it’s not always needed. These best ube brownies are soft and gooey, full of purple ube flavour and stuffed with sweet white chocolate chips. Homemade ube brownies are an easy one-bowl recipe, perfect for all occasions! Jump to: Happily, I’ve learned to make my own ube halaya and it’s so good if I say so myself! And not hard to make at all.

Fold gently. Lastly, you’ll want to fold the meringue gently into the cake batter so as not to deflate all that wonderful volume you created. A lot of folks get ube confused with taro. Not only do they taste pretty similar, but taro also can come in a light lavender color (although it mostly comes in white). But they’re actually just completely different plants. Although both ube and taro are tubers, taro is cultivated from the taro plant. Unlike ube, it’s not classified as a “yam”. In the Philippines, taro is often used in savory cooking, while ube is reserved for sweets. For example, you may think cooking with ube extract, which you can buy online or in an Asian market, is a smart move nutritionally, but that isn’t true. Most often, you add the ingredient (which is itself just sugar and flavoring) to recipes for high-sugar, high-fat foods like donuts and ice cream (two popular ube foods on social media). As a result, sanding sugar reminds crunchy even after baking. Sanding sugar is known for its shiny, sparkling effect when hit with light. The important thing is the tops are level and your two cakes are of equal height (you can eyeball this but a ruler is very handy).

Milk - In addition to the ube + coconut mixture, add whole milk or a plant-based milk of your choice. See the post for step-by-step photos, baking tips, FAQs and a Swiss meringue troubleshooting guide. I doubt adding ice cream to anything makes a recipe worse, so casually going to slide in an ube milkshake recipe. Where to buy ube extract? Ube has a smell that is natural and earthy in its aroma. It is a unique smell, and it is a very pleasant smell for most people, especially when the vegetable is fresh. Different Types Of Ube Ube ice cream is one of the most significant ingredients in the famous Filipino dessert and halo-halo. It has a fantastic taste and goes perfectly with any of your favorite warm pies. Why Do People Confuse Taro and Ube?Once the boiled milk has cooled to room temperature, beat butter with an electric mixer until light and fluffy. Add milk mixture 1 tablespoon at a time beating until smooth. Scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl every now and then. Add condensed milk and salt together with the last scoop of the roux. These were so easy to make and I loved that they didn’t need to be refrigerated prior to baking! Flavor was absolutely delicious and texture was perfectly soft after 12 min in the oven. I’ve already made these twice and plan on making them again for my family this Christmas! Thanks for the recipe 🙂 With nothing more than heavy whipping cream, sweetened condensed milk, ube flavoring extract, and ube powder, you can have this in the freezer in just 10 minutes.
