Description

Watching Punpun go again through his childhood emphasized how much of an anti-protagonist he is. Whenever he gets the opportunity to do something he actually wants, he flees from it, and in some cases spends almost the entirety of the story regretting it. I don't think it's a coincidence how the author chose to end the story with Harumi, Punpun's childhood friend. In those first couple of volumes Harumi acts like the protagonist of the story. He's someone whose goals the story works to fulfill, even as he becomes an adult, while nothing, nothing goes well for Punpun. The actual protagonist has to grasp with all his strength anything he intends to keep by his side, only to lose it, once literally, just by falling asleep. It's another example of how revolutionary this series was. Loo, Egan (July 30, 2008). "More Revealed on Aftermath of Young Sunday Mag's End". Anime News Network. What was the point of the Pegasus cult? What purpose did they serve in the long run of this series? After all, life is about reaping what you sow. We're all living on a path we've chosen. Isn't that right?" - Uncle Yuuichi Weekly Young Sunday (in Japanese). Shogakukan. Archived from the original on September 27, 2007 . When I first read the story, I felt as intrigued by Aiko as the protagonist was, but I didn't "like" her as a romantic goal. Her explicit need for her partner to abandon everything and just focus on her is terrifying, yet I forgot that she admitted that she would do that same thing for the other person. Later on, of course, that's what she does. She abandons her family, her city, herself, for Punpun and whatever fate they might have, to the extent of barely resisting when he attempts to strangle her to death; at that point she seemed more worried about his fate than her own. Her deepest wish was to disappear in a loving relationship, which would allow her to escape from her terrible life. You poor ghost of a creature. a b "Goodnight Punpun, Vol. 4". Viz Media. Like others, I'm posting this review as one for the whole series because getting too deep into each individual volume of Goodnight Punpun would be quite a feat.

An incongruity that extends to his family, all of whose members share Punpun's peculiar non-naturalistic aspect, though each of them possessing a few stylized characteristics. And yet, only the reader can see they belong to a species of its own.Ressler, Karen (May 2, 2017). Some of the references may go over the heads of many, and to those not accustomed to a distinctly Japanese style of personal drama it may be even more confronting (or perhaps they'll just find it confusing and bizarre) but, overall, I think the struggles faced by the characters are universal enough to be understood by anyone. There's demons inside of everyone, monsters we must face and overcome, and it is these monsters that Goodnight Punpun lovingly embraces, resulting in a totally unique, beautiful, sad, horrifying story.
