Having grown up taking ballet classes from the age of four and continuing well into my adulthood (and then transitioning to barre classes), it's safe to say I am very familiar with the balletcore aesthetic. As well as technique, my dance teachers over the years also stressed the importance of a ballerina's presentation. Leotards were always worn with pink opaque tights and accessorised with knitted wrap cardigans and, of course, a pair of ballet slippers. Tutus were saved for performances, but nothing could beat the excitement of getting to wear one. The best thing about balletcore? It can be worn by everyone. While the professional industry has traditionally been very exclusive, the fashion trend means everyone can live out their childhood ballerina dreams through their everyday clothing. And it's easy to do so. Knitwear and layering are key parts of the aesthetic making it timely for this transitional period into autumn, while sheer fabrics and mesh are balletcore go-to's – not to mention big trends in their own right RN.
