Description

The term “classic” gets thrown around liberally in board gaming and it’s easy to be cynical in these days of re-released, overproduced deluxe editions and definitive collections. But “ Modern Art”, from prolific designer Reiner Knizia, is definitely a contender for the title, both due to its age- it was released three decades ago- and how highly it is regarded by people within the hobby. The English-Chinese text on all the cards, the beautiful shades of blue and red, the darkness and shadows all over the place—what isn't there to love about the art in this game?

Several versions of it exist, each with its own different art style, so I'm choosing to highlight the CMON version, which includes real art pieces done by real modern artists. How cool is that?Mysterium is a game about solving mysteries using nothing but images, so it's pretty clear right off the bat that artwork is important for a game like this. Modern Art, like all Auction games, is heavily reliant on the above-table atmosphere created by the players. The strategy and tactics lie mainly in how players will react and interact with each other over the course of the four rounds, and the most successful player is likely to be the one who understands their opponents and can manipulate the situation to their advantage, rather than in other games where the cards themselves may have specific powers, combos or synergies that one can learn over time. This means that the experience of playing the game will vary wildly depending on who you are with and the level of familiarity players have with auction games generally. One final potential issue for some players is that while Modern Art will play at three players, it is clearly designed for higher player counts to get the full experience. I usually play at three players maximum and honestly, I think there are other games that will give a more consistent experience at that player count. On the rare occasions I have four people to play with? Then it’s a shoe-in for me. I've been trying to look for this game ever since I've heard about it 3 months ago. It's not available from the publisher (CMON or Oink). Is it going to get a reprint? Did it do well on its first print run? Is there a place now where I can get it for a reasonable price?

If you are into Botticelli, or even Bob Ross, then the modern works may be a bit of a turn-off

The OINK version of Modern Art is also wonderful in its own way, but unfortunately I haven't been able to find it on sale anywhere. In each round players take turns to be the auctioneer, offering up one of the cards in their hand to the highest bidder. Everyone then bids using their secret stash of cash to win the auction, or abstain if they prefer, with the Auctioneer receiving the money from the winning player. The game continues like this over the four rounds and at the end, whoever reveals they have the most money is the winner.

I Created an updated version of the auction board for veljarek version. I think you guys will love this. Closed/Secret Auction: When this type of painting is auctioned, each player secretly bids the amount they are willing to pay in a closed fist. Once everyone has made their decision, everyone simultaneously reveals and the player with the highest bid wins. In the event of a tie, the player closest to the the auctioneer is the victor. Do you have a good sense of choosing the pictures with the highest potential? Can you outplay the others?

But my favorite part of it? The amazing artwork, of course! The Oriental flavor of the game is perfectly captured. Exceptional artwork always deserves praise, which is why I want to highlight some of my favorite beautiful board games. All of its art—from the board to the cards to the tokens—is as intricate as its gameplay mechanics, making it a joy to look at and behold. I took the excellent english pasteups provided by Rakasis, added the applicable pastel colors to match the player screens, and converted to PDF to assist with printing. Print this in original size on letter size paper. The color match is almost exact on my HP Laserjet, your mileage may vary. Two heads are better than one and that adage holds true in Modern Art where two heads can better manipulate the market than one. The idea behind forming an alliance is simple: with all the market manipulation that goes on in a game of Modern Art, you want someone on your team who has an interest in manipulating the value of the paintings from the same painter you want to manipulate. A potent Manuel Carvalho alliance.

And as with all Auction games, it is about playing the other players as well as the cards- trying to entice them into bidding wars on the works of art you offer for sale while scaring them off the pieces you want to keep for yourself… but not being too obvious about it! Players can make a lot of money for the paintings they put up for auction from their hand, but the real profit will be in ensuring the cards you won are worth something in the end. How the Game Looks: Truth Beauty and Cardboard Believe it or not, the art in a game can hold massive influence over how fun that game feels— Skull just isn't the same experience when using Bicycle cards, for example.

The Math Behind Modern Art Strategy

Modern Art" is one of the most famous games of Reiner Knizia. The Oink Games version of it lets you feel like a real buying agent of one of the best art muesums in the world. To win, you need to make the most money. And to make money, you need to be able to figure out how much a painting will rank so that you don’t overbid. It’s difficult to do when everyone is trying to do the same thing.
