Now risen from the dead Jesus Christ calls us to play to his glory. Romans 12:1-2 urges us to: ‘Offer our bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God, this is your spiritual act of worship’. Spike Lee’s depiction of women almost always leaves feminists with something to be angry about. This movie is not the one to save Lee for the feminists. For one, Martha Shuttlesworth seemed like a helpless housewife in the movie. She’s a stereotypical doting mother who shouts out from the apartment building window to Jesus in the basketball court when it’s time for supper. She’s a generally submissive wife who, in domestic squabbles, get the brunt of a violent exchange with her husband. Her submissiveness ultimately led her to her death. His sense of responsibility was also tested because when his mom died, and his father was behind bars, he had to take care of his little sister. He essentially skipped the formative years of young adulthood to become both a big brother and a parent to his sister. Despite these challenges, Jesus Shuttlesworth is not just a passive victim of circumstance. He is a talented and driven young man who is determined to make his own way in the world, and this drive and ambition is what makes him such a compelling character.

Book Sandcastle Kings hits stores this November with artwork by Kanye West & the Donda Creative Team Jesus Shuttlesworth is a fictional character from the Spike Lee Directed movie He Got Game. He’s a high school basketball phenom from Coney Island confronted by the difficult choice to either go to college or jump directly into the NBA. In the movie, the damaged, conflicted, and real-life NBA star Ray Allen portrays the responsible role of Jesus Shuttlesworth. Although this story isn’t a part of NBA history, it’s certainly celebrated in NBA and basketball culture. As you plan this activity, please follow the counsel given in chapter 13 of Handbook 2: Administering the Church (2010) and review “ Safety Recommendations for Church Activities.” More IdeasThroughout the film, Jesus is seen as a skilled basketball player who is always looking to improve and get better. Whether he is practicing on his own or competing in games, he is always focused and determined to be the best that he can be. And even when faced with difficult personal challenges, he never loses sight of his ultimate goal. Also, whether a sports team wins generally doesn’t depend on the actions of just one person. That’s why they’re team sports. Even if Jesus were the greatest basketball player in history, his teammates (e.g., a ragtag bunch of Galilean fishermen) could lose the game. Off the court, Ray Allen also did a remarkable job of bringing the character’s inner turmoil to the surface. Jesus Shuttlesworth is a young man who is grappling with a great deal of pressure and expectations, and Ray Allen was able to convey this sense of tension and uncertainty in a way that was both convincing and relatable.

If the church is even partially a representation of these demographics, then it would mean that sports players are arguably one of the largest groups in any church.

Like basketball, poetry demands perfection. The limitedness of the word count forces the poet to make use of every single word in an exacting way. Each line has to interact correctly with the last one to get the message across to the readers. Each word plays a role in making the reader see the bigger picture. This demand for perfection from every small part makes basketball poetry in motion. What college did Jesus Shuttlesworth go to? Moving from high school straight to the professional league is a decision that not a lot of great players make. Even the arguably the greatest player of all time in Michael Jordan felt like he needed to go to college before going pro. Jesus Shuttlesworth, however, is portrayed as once in a lifetime player who can compete at the highest level of the sport at an early age. This talent is a huge anchor for this confusion and conflict. He values education, but at the same time, he values giving his sister and himself the best position to be in the present. Choosing to go to college secures his future; choosing to go for the NBA secures his present. In the movie, he has to choose between the two. In conclusion, Jesus Shuttlesworth is a truly remarkable character who continues to captivate audiences more than two decades after his introduction. With his drive, his talent, and his determination, he is a young man who embodies the spirit of what it means to be a true competitor, and who continues to inspire and motivate fans of the film. The Significance of the Name: Jesus Shuttlesworth in “He Got Game” Dr. John Brummer: I mean, if He’s Jesus He does not have to be strong. I think it’s more genetic than anything. Strength of ligaments and previous injuries and stuff like that. [Though] I would not encourage playing sports in sandals.

In basketball, height is an advantage, but the Church does not hold that Jesus was the tallest man in history.Pastor Rich Wilkerson: In my opinion, He would crush at basketball. I think He would dominate. He’d be the man. This is Jesus we’re talking about. He can walk on water—what kind of dunks could He do? Jake, on the other hand, has experienced a transformation of his own. Shown in the stark difference of his treatment between his wife and Dakota Burns, a prostitute whom he befriends and treats nicely.
