Description

The novel starts out with Eloise Bridgerton’s quest to find a husband because she’s feeling spinsterish at the ripe old age of 28. Everything starts when she sends out a standard condolence note to her cousin’s husband. After corresponding for some time he decides he wants to meet her and the story unfolds. The only thing that redeemed this even slightly was the second epilogue. Now THAT’S a story I want more of. Barely any Phillip, a cinnamon roll hero, and an interesting heroine. Eloise is such a special woman, and was so sure of herself. She truly inspired me, making me feel things. She wasn’t afraid to take the bull by the horns so to speak, and make her own way. She wasn’t sure why she kept sending her missives, just that she spent so much time writing letters to whichever of her siblings were not in residence in London at the time, and it seemed easy enough to pen a short note to some far-off relative while she was seated at her escritoire.

What happened?” Mrs. Hurley had gasped when he staggered through the kitchen door. He hadn’t wanted to use the main entrance, where he might be seen by his children, and besides, the kitchen door was closer by a good forty yards. One other thing I liked was the snippets of Eloise's correspondence at the start of each chapter - but even that touching glimpse into her past was not enough to pull my disappointment away from almost every action of Phillips 🙄I don't know about anyone else, but I don't personally find bossy know-it-alls charming. In real life, everyone avoids them like the plague. For good reason. But now wasn’t the time to shirk his duties or his place, and so he sat at her bedside throughout the day and into the night. He mopped her brow when she began to perspire, tried to pour lukewarm broth down her throat when she was calm. He sighed, then surprised himself by reaching for his own stationery and quill. He’d received precious few condolence notes since Marina had died. It seemed most of her friends and family had forgotten her since her marriage. He supposed he shouldn’t be upset, or even surprised. She’d rarely left her bedchamber; it was easy to forget about someone one never saw.

Phillip arched a brow as he inclined his head toward Romney Hall. “Are you calling my ancestral home drafty?” He had been married to her fourth cousin Marina for eight years, which meant that he’d been twenty-one at his wedding. It was one of those stories where the characters live more in their heads-- lots of second guessing which always drives me a little crazy... I missed the charming repartee and funny encounters found in some of the other stories. killed, then turned to her brothers and motioned to each in turn, saying, "Anthony, Benedict, Colin,

And now here she was, rolling toward Gloucestershire, rolling toward destiny, she supposed –or hoped, she wasn’t sure which– with nothing but a few changes of clothing and a pile of letters written to her by a man she’d never met. You will, of course, be properly chaperoned. If you accept my invitation, I will make immediate plans to bring my widowed aunt to Romney Hall.

It's a joke, Eloise," he said, giving his head a weary shake. "Come along, now. Let's make sure your Sir WTH is up with the tempers & tendency towards violence for the men of this world? Perhaps a product of the time & it is becoming increasingly apparent that these are the kind of men this author writes but they are such hard passes...I cannot with them! 🤬 Their overbearing reactions are not romantic and should not be glorified as such 🤢 Which brings us to the worst thing about him—yeah, it wasn't any of the horrible things listed above, if you can believe it. She complains about these problems in their marriage (no communication, he isn't present, he leaves childcare in the nurse's hands and to her without a second thought, he is never willing to deal with things and when she brings up problems, he dismisses her as talking too much and being insane and a typical crazy woman) and what does he do? He RAGES at her that since their marriage doesn't have the problems of his first (his wife was depressed and suicidal), she has no right to complain, because this is heaven. Are… you… kidding… me? And the worst thing is, he succeeds in his emotional manipulation, because she cries and they make love and whatnot. This isn't healthy.
