a b Scientific Assessment of Ozone Depletion: 2014 Full Report. World Meteorological Organization Global Ozone Research and Monitoring Project—Report No. 55. 2014. p.551. The product can be handled in repair shops in the same way as R-134a, although it requires some different, specialized equipment to perform the service. One of the reasons for that is the flammability of HFO-1234yf. [16] Another issue affecting the compatibility between HFO-1234yf and R-134a-based systems is the choice of lubricating oil. [17] Within an hour the whole recharge process is completed and you will once again have refreshing cool air on demand. Our trained technicians will show you the difference in your AC before and after recharge. Vehicle air conditioners that are not recharged regularly will be less effective and have to work harder to produce cool air. This puts more strain on the engine and uses more fuel. If your air conditioning system has not been recharged in the past two years it will dramatically reduce efficiency. Recharge or No Charge

There aren’t any specific new types of components required. However, it is critical to ensure that system components are rated for R-1234yf and that the appropriate safety standards are followed. In addition, it is strongly encouraged that users include an internal heat exchanger (IHX). Following this best practice will help to ensure cooling capacity of the evaporator can be met at all desired operating conditions given the slight differences in properties between the two refrigerants. Let me start this off with saying that a 1234yf system is VERY similar to an R-134a system. If you are familiar with 134a repairs then you should be just fine with YF repairs as well. That being said there are a few points that I want to make to you before we move on to the next section: Autonoe has gained a reputation throughout the industry for providing quality products. Working in partnership with our members enables Autonoe to develop new, innovative products tailored to their specific requirements. Autonoe products have made a tangible difference to trade customers nationwide, increasing their sales, margin, and efficiency of supply. The thermal performance, non-toxic chemistry and stability are nearly the same between R-1234yf and R-134a. The primary difference between the two is R-1234yf being slightly more flammable. ASHRAE classifies R-1234yf as a “mildly-flammability” fluid (A2L); R-134a carries an A1 safety classification due to its lower flame propagation. As the technology needed to re-gas or maintain the air conditioning system is different, only trained and certified technicians should work on the car or van, and only those garages that have made the investment in the new air conditioning machines can re-gas the systems. Currently there are very few garages that have made that investment, including many main dealerships. However, here at Garage express in North London, NW9, we have the new machine available for our customers’ cars or vans.

The Facts

In fact, proactive maintenance of the air conditioning system is even more important here as the air con system in electric cars is also used for thermal management, that is, the cooling of components including the batteries and electric motors, which can become very hot with extended use. By cooling the battery, the air conditioning system supports effective charging processes and contributes significantly to the vehicle's performance and battery life. So regular air con maintenance is no longer just for comfort. There is a slight difference as you go up in temperature but for the most part 134a and 1234yf work on very similar temperatures and pressure. Just like cars that run on petrol and diesel, both electric vehicles and hybrids will also require the air con system recharged when the refrigerant gas in the air con system needs replacing. Otherwise, the air con system in your vehicle will not operate effectively and will start to blow warm air. It’s important to remember that any technician working on the A/C system should be F-Gas certified. We offer an IMI ATA approved A/C with F-gas training programme. The two-day course includes an overview of the components, how they work and how best to diagnose faults. It also covers the recently introduced EC legislation with an assessment for EC307/2008 F-gas legislation.

Use the global warming potential to calculate the carbon dioxide equivalent weight of an F gas HFCs To accommodate the new refrigerant and ensure correct identification during servicing, new connectors have been introduced to the A/C loop, meaning new equipment is required. Due to the still significant parc of R134a equipped vehicles, dual recovery/charging stations are available, featuring separate refrigerant tanks and hoses for both gases. Alternatively, if you already have a good R134a station, or are new to A/C servicing, you may wish to consider a standalone R1234yf machine. You’ll also need a new refrigerant leak detector and a refrigerant identifier, if it’s not built into yourA/C machine. Detects Leaks: More than just an air con recharging treatment, the UV dye helps find leaks in metal and rubber components There were many disputes from numerous companies and organizations from all over the world to this test and claim from Daimler that the new refrigerant was unsafe for use. For a time it seemed like German Automakers were going to fight HFOs tooth and nail. They had their hearts set on R-744 CO2. Over the years though there have been numerous court battles and fines issued by the European Union but still Germany persisted against 1234yf.HFO-1234yf has been shown to atmospherically transform into the ultrashort PFAS trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) leading to potential for wet and dry atmospheric deposition [39] See also [ edit ] Application : Automotive|Cold storage|Commercial ice machines|Food Retail - Condensing unit|Food Retail - High side of cascade|Food Retail - Stand-alone refrigerator|Food Retail - Supermarket system|Household refrigerators/freezers|Ice Rinks|Industrial Process - Non chiller|Industrial Process - Industrial high temperature heating|Industrial Process – Chillers: Low or Medium Temperature|Refrigerated transport is classified by the ASHRAE as a 2L flammable gas. That means that 1234yf is rated as mildly flammable. Depending on who you are this could be a big deal or it couldn’t matter at all. There are two ways to look at this. Your car is already carrying gasoline in it and I can assure you that gas is far more flammable then 1234yf. On the other hand adding more flammable liquids to your car only increases your chance of fire during a collision. In terms of its global warming potential, HFO-1234YF has a GWP of less than one which makes it less harmful than the equivalent mass of carbon dioxide (1 GWP) and sits well below the limit of 150. R134a, on the other hand, has a GWP of 1430. The benefits of the new refrigerant are therefore clear from an environmental viewpoint. As of 2018, it is believed that 50% of new vehicles around the world have an air-con unit using HFO-1234YF, thus making a huge, ongoing reduction in greenhouse emissions. Directive 2006/40/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 17 May 2006 relating to emissions from air-conditioning systems in motor vehicles and amending Council Directive 70/156/EEC". Zatz, David (October 1, 2013). "Chrysler adopting R1234YF". Allpar News (Press release) . Retrieved 2018-06-16. Is your Air Conditioning blowing warm air? It's likely that you need an Air Conditioning Regas, also known as a Recharge. In almost all hybrid and electric vehicles, the air conditioning system is also responsible for the Thermal Management of the battery to maintain maximum efficiency and prevent battery damage. It’s already here! While the actual phase out R-134a doesn’t go into effect until the year 2020 many auto manufacturers have already taken the initiative and have begun using 1234yf on their newer model vehicles. These are all huge names in the car industry and while not all of their models are covered under YF I feel that it is only a matter of time before they all make the switch. (Keep in mind too that the EPA’s mandated deadline is 2020/2021 model year.) History of 1234yfPMM: The new refrigerant is more climate-friendly. But what is R1234yf and how does it differ from R134a? is a Hydroflurocarbon refrigerant while 1234yf is a Hydrofluroolefin refrigerant. While these are two separate classes of refrigerants they are in fact very close to each other. The only main difference is that the HFO refrigerants have a double carbon bond whereas HFCs do not. For those of you in the distribution industry or even those of you who like to buy cylinders in bulk you should know that 1234yf is labeled as a hazardous material. You will need to follow certain restrictions if you plan on storing a significant amount of YF at your facility. It is best to read up on this topic and also to consult with your local fire department to ensure that you are in standard.

The properties and regulatory fit of HFO-1234yf make it an ideal base molecule for electrified heavy-duty vehicles.” SAE International Cooperative Research Project Offers Update on R1234yf Refrigerant". MACS Worldwide. December 14, 2012. Archived from the original on 26 July 2018 . Retrieved 26 July 2018. The European directive did not designate HFO-1234YF as the replacement for R134a. In fact, the compound did not yet exist in 2006 and was specifically developed with the legislation in mind and therefore exceeds a number of requirements set out in the regulations. It is a low-cost alternative to R134a and is largely interchangeable in the workshop although its mild flammability requires some specialist equipment. Mostly it will be automobiles that use 1234yf. Eventually we will see medium duty and even heavy duty vehicles come over to the YF side as well. Ok, so we’ve got the basic facts out of the way now on this refrigerant. Now let’s take a look at some of the more interesting points about this refrigerant.Innovation in most industries will come as a result of years of Research and Development (R&D). The development of the new 1234YF gas will have come from a large financial investment from the two manufacturers and therefore they price their products at a level that will help to recoup that investment. At the moment, the new 1234YF gas is significantly more expensive than the original R134. However, it is likely that, as more suppliers enter the market, over time, these costs will gradually reduce. Where can I get 1234YF Gas for my air conditioning? HFO-1234yf was developed by a team at DuPont, led by Barbara Haviland Minor, which worked jointly with researchers at Honeywell. [8] [9] Their goal was to meet European directive 2006/40/EC, which went into effect in 2011 and required that all new car platforms for sale in Europe use a refrigerant in its AC system with a global warming potential (GWP) below 150. [10] [11] Ozone and TFA Impacts in North America from Degradation of 2,3,3,3-Tetrafluoropropene (HFO-1234yf), A Potential Greenhouse Gas Replacement HFO-1234yf was initially considered to have a 100-year GWP of 4, and is now considered to have a 100-year GWP lower than 1. [4] [3] It can be used as a "near drop-in replacement" for R-134a, [12] the product previously used in automobile AC systems, which has a 100-year GWP of 1430. [5] [13] This meant that automakers would not have to make significant modifications in assembly lines or in vehicle system designs to accommodate the product. HFO-1234yf had the lowest switching cost for automakers among the proposed alternatives. [14] [15]
