Medi Derma-S Barrier Cream and Film - Medicareplus
In March 2023 we organised a link nurse study focused around the theme Moisture Associated Skin Damage (MASD). As part of this day Kerry (Medicareplus Rep) came to present sessions on MASD, Medical-Adhesive Related Skin Injury (MARSI) and barrier products. Kerry tried to apply her presentations to our pediatric population, with case studies and imagery, which can be difficult. Cavilon™ Durable Barrier Cream is durable and resists wash-off so only needs to be applied ‘night and day’ The team at Medicareplus have provided an extensive range of educational resources in a variety of formats such as on-demand videos, leaflets, presentations and guidance. This offers health care professionals a vast choice of learning materials to suit different learning styles and on-demand availability to accommodate shift work. I think it’s brilliant that these resources can be accessed and printed off and can be used for teaching on wards. It’s important for healthcare professionals and patients alike to be aware of moisture-associated skin damage (MASD). This can occur when the skin is exposed to moisture for long periods of time. That moisture can be from a great many sources (sweat, urine, saliva, wounds, etc) and can lead to a variety of problems like skin irritation, breakdown and infection.
Angela always keeps regular communication and replies to queries in a timely manner, and is always able to assist in helping me with any problems or concerns. Long Lasting Protection – resilient, hydrophobic protective barrier from moisture associated skin damage All staff commented on how great it was to have other speakers during the day and also how useful the MASD and barrier products sessions were. They highlighted that they had never had this teaching previously and how much it made sense. It was delivered in a down-to-earth, easy-to-understand format with practical demonstrations. Medi Derma-S Barrier Cream moisturises and protects damaged and intact skin by forming a protective waterproof barrier, preventing irritation from bodily fluids, adhesive products and friction. The training was provided by Angela Turnbull to staff attending a wider wound care training programme in the Trust. The session provided staff with current, up to date knowledge on recognising and preventing MASD.
13.2.2 Barrier preparations
Invaluable training to our staff to educate them when to identify the need to step up/step down and escalate to a RGN, has improved their education and confidence and the standard of care our patients receive. The educational sessions are extremely informative and delivered exceptionally well empowering staff to recognise is skin is deteriorating. Julie has worked with us on a couple of projects in her role as Clinical Nurse Specialist with Medicareplus. She is reliable and supportive and an excellent educator. Julie has been able to teach various members of staff about skin integrity through a number of routes including ward-based training and link nurse meetings. Provides protection around the area where the dressing, pouch or adhesive device is to be applied by forming a transparent coating Non-plasticised no sting barrier films are less able to maintain a continuous protective coating when stretched The trust will be switching from Cavilon to Medi Derma-STotal Barrier Cream and it will be a valuable addition to the formulary."
We will continue to repeat training to the nurses and carers to ensure everyone is aware of the pathway and how the barrier products work and which product to choose." We will continue to ask Medicareplus International for support with MASD training for our staff in TEWV to ensure our patients receive the most appropriate treatment." Summer is a great time to get out and enjoy the sun and fine weather. But for those of us living with a stoma, it can also be a time of challenges. Stomas are not always comfortable and they can make you feel quite self-conscious. Bianchi J, Beldon P, Callaghan R, Stephen-Haynes J (2013) Barrier products: Effective use of a barrier cream and film. Wounds UK 9(1): 82-8. The pathway is easy for all clinicians and cares to use when choosing which barrier product is required. The products are easy to apply and cost-effective.

We have been working collaboratively with Medicareplus International to ensure Medi Derma pathway and formulary compliance for our local community. Proving events to promote compliance and patient centred care. Angela was great – her delivery was tailored to the staff in the room (e.g. area of work, job role and discussed the products on our formulary). The content was appropriate and very useful and all staff commented on how it will benefit them in practice – they have a better awareness of which products to use when and were already discussing plans on how to relay this information to their colleagues. I feel patient care will definitely improve as a result of staff receiving this training. Cavilon™ No Sting Barrier Film contains an additional polymer to increase the flexibility of the film and reduce embrittlement Personally, I have only used the Medi Derma-S barrier cream to date and have found this to be an excellent product. My colleagues have used the Medi Derma- PRO Foam and Spray Incontinence Cleanser which have also been very effective. Total barrier protection strategy with Medi Derma-S Barrier Cream which protects broken and unbroken skin. It restores skin hydration and maintains the skin integrity.
The trust will continue to use the Medi Derma-S range and the 4 step approach. The product works and the whole borough is trained; other local ICS use the product."
