Description

The 750X and 700 are also the only models that come with a carrying case, although you can buy one for the other models as an accessory.

You want to do this an even number of times so each flute is sharpened equally. The number of turns required depends a great deal on the size of the bit. According to the owner’s manual, a 3/32-inch bit may take 2-4 half-turns while a 3/8-inch bit might take 16-20 half-turns. It’s easy and takes very little time. However, they both have some additional accessories that are worth mentioning. Fortunately, these accessories are compatible with both machines. 100-Grit Rough Diamond Cutting WheelThis machine has fewer functions than either the Drill Doctor DD500X or the Drill Doctor DD750X, so it can’t take care of nearly as many of your drill bits. However, it’s simple two-step process really can’t be beaten for ease of use. One word of caution for the DrillDoctor’s sharpening power is that they will remove the protective coating from the tip of your drill bit (but not the shaft) on coated bits. Thinking about all that needs to be in place for a proper drill bit, its amazing you can even sharpen one. The Drill Doctor has taken away all of the guessing game. Their system is great and very easy to use. You don’t have to worry about the chisel point being proper, the cutting edges being just right or anything else. The Drill Doctor takes care of all this for you. All you have to do is set the bit and rotate. Everything else is left up to the Drill Doctor. Believe it or not, sharpening a bit is very precise and needs to be. Again, an improper drill bit that is not sharpened correctly will cause more wear and tear on your drill. Say you have a dull drill bit and part of the drill bit material is covering up a portion of the flute. If part of the flute is covered up, then the material you are drilling into will not be able to be brought to the top of your work and the hole will not be cleaned out while you are drilling. So in essence you will not only be cutting the hole you are drilling into, you will also have material that was cut sitting in the hole which will cause more friction and forces the drill to cut that material over and over. As we said, there is a lot to sharpening a drill bit. The chisel point, which is the center point on the tip of the drill bit, must be perfectly centered. The angle between the chisel point and the cutting edge must be proper for each application. You must also have a proper downward angle away from the cutting edge.

There really is only one difference in terms of included features between the two models, the DD750X comes with a bag for transporting the tool from place to place. If you want a transport bag for the Drill Doctor DD500X you need to buy it separately. There are two ports for sharpening, one for standard sharpening and one for use with split point bits. A 6-foot power cord provides a fair amount of reach to a power source. The motor is a magnet motor, providing consistent power even at high speeds or loads. Although both machines are similar in appearance, the DD500X’s simplicity means it is also less intimidating for new users or for workshops that focus on training.

Best Drill Bit Sharpener for Beginners

The standard sharpening port also uses a unique design where you rotate the bit over the wheel to sharpen the bit. The port is slightly oval shape, allowing for perfect sharpening on the bit wings. I have also heard that even if you can hand grind a bit, it is hard to grind both flutes evenly so they will drill a round, exact-sized and straight hole. Putting a split point on a drill bit is suppose to be even harder and requires a grinding wheel with a sharp, not rounded, edge. With all of that in mind, the DD750X becomes the clear winner of this category as well. While the two machines are equally well suited to handling your smallest bits ( minimum size is 3/32 inch), the DD750X will go further in maintaining your largest bits. Learning Curve Sure, the process is self-contained so you aren’t likely to see little metal shavings flying all over the place, but you should think about how much time you are willing to put into learning and experimenting with these machines before you decide which one you want to buy. Buy some kind of sharpening machine or jig– I can’t afford even a used commercial quality tool grinder like a Darex. That left either buying or making some kind of device for holding a drill at the proper angle against a grinding wheel, or buying a Drill Doctor or some other drill bit sharpener that is affordable enough for a home/hobbyist machinist.
