However, this is Lee’s autobiography about his life, so it’s inevitable he will focus on what he wants to tell and not fulfill my idle curiosity. As such, I’ve a much better idea of who he was as a man and, while it differs greatly from my impression gleaned from his movies and interviews and anecdotes I’ve read, I’m glad I read the book. He led a fascinating life, and I’m impressed that he saw the last public guillotine execution in Paris and met the assassin of Rasputin.

Before anyone ever considered making the Lord of the Rings books into movies, Lee was a fanatic for them. He reportedly reread them every year for most of his adult life, and given how busy his schedule was, that’s saying a lot. Also, of all the people who played roles in the Lord of the Rings films, Lee was the only one who actually got to meet J.R.R. Tolkien in person. According to Lee, he turned down the role of Dr. Sam Loomis in Halloween, which eventually went to Donald Pleasance. Lee considered his refusal to be the biggest mistake of his professional career, despite the fact that he had also turned the role of Judge Doom in Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Considering that Christopher Lloyd’s performance in that film basically seemed like a tribute to Lee, we can’t see he missed out on that much.

From 1958 to 1976, Lee played Dracula in a total of ten films. We would have gotten tired of it by the fifth or six movie, personally. In an interview in August 2013, Lee said that he was "saddened" to hear his friend Johnny Depp was considering retiring from acting, observing that he himself had no intention of doing that:

What is the Net Worth of Christopher Lee?

Lee’s towering height at 6’5” got him entered into the Guinness Book of World Records as the tallest lead actor. Despite this honor, his height actually proved to be a handicap early on in Lee’s career. He couldn’t land many supporting roles because the leading actors were all much shorter than he, and this was a time when men would happily wear platform shoes to look as tall as possible on camera. Initially, I was told [by Somlo] I was too tall to be an actor. That's a quite fatuous remark to make. It's like saying you're too short to play the piano. I thought, "Right, I'll show you..." At the beginning I didn't know anything about the technique of working in front of a camera, but during those 10 years, I did the one thing that's so vitally important today – I watched, I listened and I learned. So when the time came I was ready... Oddly enough, to play a character who said nothing [The Creature in The Curse of Frankenstein]. [72] a b c d Farndale, Nigel (12 February 2011). [124] He said he would have liked to have shown Saruman's corruption by Sauron, [125] but was too old to travel to New Zealand, so the production was adjusted to allow him to participate from London.
