Dake argues, as noted above, that before the Incarnation, the Son (Jesus) had a spirit body as did the Father and the Spirit; however, he says that when Jesus came to earth, He exchanged His spirit body for a human body: “He laid aside His God body to take a human body, His immortality in body to become mortal.” 36 Jesus’ resurrection, in Dake’s view, was a return to a spiritual body, the same kind of body that believers will receive at their resurrection. Dake claimed, “Even resurrected bodies of flesh-and-bone saints are called ‘spiritual’ (1Cor.15:44), so spiritual bodies are of materialized, spiritualized substance — something we know nothing about, as far as experience is concerned, at the present time.” 37 This type of spiritualized body, he argues, enabled Jesus (as it will us) to go through doors (John20:26), appear and disappear at will (Luke24:31), and change form (Mark16:12).Stanley M. Burgess and Gary B. McGee, Dictionary of Pentecostal and Charismatic Movements (Grand Rapids: Regency Reference Library, 1988), s.v. “Dake, Finis Jennings.” Each Christian denomination can point to certain preachers and teachers who have helped shape and propagate its theology and practice. One such prominent figure in Pentecostal and charismatic circles is Finis Jennings Dake (1902–87), author of The Dake Annotated Reference Bible. The Dictionary of Pentecostal and Charismatic Movements states, Dake’s “impact on conservative Pentecostalism cannot be overstated.” 1 In other words, the Dake Bible is the ultimate tool to help you truly understand Scripture and “rightly divide the word of truth.” Like all study Bibles, I encourage readers to do their own study using multiple passages and study tools with prayer. Remember that notes are not infallible – only God’s Word is infallible.

It was a big decision for a lad, and cost me a few friends now and again – friends who preferred to listen to almost anyone who had gray hair, rather than a youth just emerging from his teens. But my hair is gray too now, yet my decision remains the same. The prophecies, promises, admonitions and doctrines are there in the Bible the same as they were when I began quoting them years ago. They are in plain language, understandable by anyone who can read and will take time to look up an occasional word in the dictionary. Numerous evangelical Bible scholars and apologists have expressed concern over Dake’s unorthodox teachings, but no major work has been published to expose and correct them. Dake’s popularity, however, demands an evaluation of his teachings in light of historic Christian orthodoxy. This article touches on only a few.God’s attributes or described as being Omniscient, Omnipotent and Omnipresent.24 However, he does understand God to be limiting himself in his dealings with man where Omniscience is concerned.25 Jeremiah 19:5 They have built also the high places of Baal, to burn their sons with fire for burnt offerings unto Baal, which I commanded not, nor spake it, neither came it into my mind: Deuteronomy 8:2 And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no. Other notes contain lists, such as Acts 13:4, which list the 15 places of Paul’s first missionary journey. It seems like lists comprise the majority of the notes. I found them helpful and informative.

A lot of the notes are factual and include statistics. For example: Exodus 13:5 says “24 th prophecy in Ex. (13:5 fulfilled). Next, v. 19.” This gives a chain reference for all the prophecies in Exodus. There is also monetary information. It’s nice to know how much a shekel is worth in 2013 dollars. There is also information on geography, cultures, customs, etc. Richard Love and Jennifer Bryon Owen, “The Pentecostal Study Bible,” Charisma and Christian Life, January 1988, 39. Archer asserts that Dake’s stand is invalid. “It certainly seems to be a faith-plus-works proposition. I don’t recall anywhere in Pentecostal beliefs that suggests that. It sounds cultic, and there is very great cause for alarm.”According to the Beatitudes, we should pursue happiness in the Lord. We need to adopt a theology of happiness. The pursuit of happiness is common to all people. It is the motive behind much of what we do. But the path to true happiness is far different than people think. This nine-session course investigates the joys that can be found in knowing God and living his way. 5.Psalms: Managing Our Emotions The articles on Finis Dake that we already have are written by a variety of authors. These articles touch on all of the major areas that Finis Dake and the Dake Annotated Reference Bible deviate from true Christianity. Future articles will examine specific beliefs or issues more in-depth. Dake, to his credit, argues that the Bible is the inspired, inerrant, authoritative Word of God; therefore, it cannot contain contradictions. His effort to systematize biblical teachings on hundreds of topics appears to be sincere. He argues that the Bible was written in simple human language and should be interpreted at face value: “We shall let what God says mean what He says and reject any theory of men to the contrary.” 19 Dake’s overriding rule of interpretation is, “Take every statement of the Bible as literal when it is at all possible and where it is clear that it is literal, otherwise, it is figurative.” 20 Dake applies this often-repeated rule unwaveringly, and his simple, literal interpretations probably account for the popularity of his Bible commentary. His attention to the biblical text results in many correct observations and interpretations; however, his overly simplistic, hyperliteral approach results in many incorrect interpretations as well as unorthodox and problematic doctrines in his theology.
