Based on my experience with some groups, I may prefer to explain the game before I distribute the sweets. This way, the group is less likely to be distracted and may not actually hear my instructions.

Two truths and a lie. Students share two things about themselves that are true and say one thing which is a lie. Award bonus points for students who can persuade others that their lie is a truth. Venture Team Building was started with the aim of providing free resources for anyone interested in delivering team building and experiential learning activities. Amy feels fortunate to be in a position where she can inspire others to create a culture where they genuinely love what they do and are happy to be at work. Believing everyone deserves this opportunity, she knows everyone has the potential to feel like a superhero. Amy wants to help individuals and teams find their purpose and value, in work and in life. Specify a set time limit for each story (e.g. 60 seconds max) so no one talks for too long and you lose the interest of the group. If you are concerned about levels of sugar intake with this exercise, start with four or five beans instead. Or, variously coloured stones.

Desert island essentials. Ask students: ‘If you were stranded on a desert island, what five things would you take with you?’ Categories could be decided together and might include favourite music, food, book or film. For a variation on this theme, students could devise their own essential survival kit. As one of the slowest, least coordinated kids in class, I was never much into competitive activities. But, here’s a game where everybody wins at the end… When eating the bar, you would experience a mint crunch combined with the fuller flavour of dark chocolate combined with the lighter milk chocolate flavour. It was a very interesting combination. More On Old Chocolate Bars:

Speed dating. Give students a list of 10–15 ‘challenges’. They need to move around the classroom finding people who fit the bill – for example, find someone who loves yellow, someone who has size 5 feet, someone who hates sushi, etc. Trade & Share: As part of the Jelly Bean trade game process, invite each person to share something about themselves to their partner before swapping beans and moving on. Silly storytime. One student starts with the first line of an invented story. When 15/30 seconds are up, they pass or throw the storytelling bear/ball/sweet/pen to another student who has to continue the story, and so on. Heads or tails? As a fun icebreaker, play a guessing game. Students have to guess heads or tails, putting their hands on their heads or their hands on their bottoms to show their choice. Flip a coin. Those who guessed the right side of the coin remain standing, and everyone else sits down. The last student standing is the winner.

When I say the word “candy” my students’ ears immediately perk up. I generally steer clear of allowing any type of candy or treats in my classroom for various reasons including health and cost, but this colorful and delicious icebreaker activity was worth breaking my own rules. I used Skittles for this activity but you could use any sort of small, colorful candy. (M&M’s, jelly beans, Sixlets, etc.) Some of these activities are designed to help participants to be more creative and think differently in subsequent group work and has shown to produce better results. When ready, ask your group to mix and mingle with one another with a view to trading different coloured jelly beans, one for one. Categories. Have ready a list of categories related to your subject and/or to subjects students will relate to (famous novels, items found in a laboratory, countries in Europe, American actors, etc.). Go round the room asking each student to name something in that category in five seconds. If they can’t think of anything or they repeat one, they’re out. The winner is the last one standing.

Many tried to do this themselves after buying the chocolate bar to little success. More Retro Sweets and Chocolate Bars The original Reese's Peanut Butter Cup was created in 1928 as a partnership between H.B. Reese and Milton Hershey. Since then, the Reese's family has grown to include a variety of flavours and forms.F... Icebreaker taboo. Get students to identify a special power, an unusual fact or interesting quirk, for example impressively large hands, unexpected double-jointedness, an exotic birthplace, etc. They should write down three words connected with this ‘secret’ on a card, without using the word itself. Other students have to guess this special fact using the words on the card as clues (and up to five yes/no questions). There was a TV advert for the Ice Breaker but for the life of me I cannot find it anywhere. The advert showed the Ice Breaker bar snapping across the Zig Zag into two pieces. Before doing some workshop activities, it can be useful to make everyone relax, get to know each other and also to mix up the participants for group work. It can also be good to break up a Power Point heavy day with fun activities to get people out of their seats and awake.

Announce that the aim of the exercise is for everyone to collect a set of ten jelly beans all of the same colour. The first person to achieve this lofty goal within, say, three minutes, wins. Running translation. Put a sheet of key facts, text or annotated images up outside your classroom. Students work in pairs or groups and take turns to go to the sheet and memorise as much of the content as they can. They return to their peers and dictate what to write down. They repeat the process, taking turns to run/write until they have recreated the sheet as far as possible. No phones or shouting for this game! Explain that they will need to take it in turns to share with the group a story based on the following colour code:Give individuals a few minutes to reflect on the question and to think of something before sharing. Do you have a programming question? Looking for activity suggestions? Want to know what others think? Place a pair of dice with every third or fourth person in the circle and set the timer for five minutes.
