Description

Improving Interactions in the Early Years by Professor Julie Fisher challenges the reader to carefully consider their role and function as they care for young children. As we grapple with when to interact or intervene, we do not always get it right, however when the interaction or the non-interference meet the need of the child, we do get the sense of a special shared moment when both the child and the adult benefit from the coming together. With the increasing emphasis on performance and outcome measures imposed on schools this book is a timely reminder to stop and think about how we educate and how children actually learn. This latest book by Julie Fisher is an ABSOLUTE MUST for everybody who is interested in child development from babyhood onwards! Fisher points out how 'the very act of being an educator can sometimes distort the nature of an interaction so much that it inhibits the very learning it is trying to promote'.

Julie Fisher reminds us to look not only at the hands of child, to what they are ‘doing’, but to the whole body and facial expression, that could be of intense concentration, hard thinking, ‘eureka’ moments, or grappling with a problem. She has linked (through excellent first hand examples) how adults need to interact rather than to interfere in the encouragement of spoken language needed for deep thought. She held the post of Early Years Adviser in Oxfordshire for 11 years, before which she was lecturer in early childhood education at the University of Reading. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. There is a tendency for adult talk to dominate nurseries and schools in an attempt to manage, organise and interrogate children's learning; this closes down children's own investigation and capacity for thought. Her examples of this in action show how even the youngest infants use language to help them make sense; to be in control of themselves and to negotiate with their friends to help solve 'play inspired' problems. We were reminded of the importance of our human tendencies, our inborn predispositions for communication and gregariousness.

She was a lecturer in early childhood education at the University of Reading and was then an Early Years Adviser in Oxfordshire for 11 years. To offer delegates a range of strategies for building warm, trusting relationships and enhancing language and skills of communication.

Do join us on Tuesday when we share the full conversation with you, after which we will break into smaller groups to explore this challenge to our practice. Ofsted inspectors please note that the continual interruption by adults who constantly question or interrupt children who need time to think is damaging their emotions and their learning. Offers practical guidance on developing high quality interactions to better scaffold children s learning and development.

Politicians should read this book but then they already know how to educate our children don't they. In particular Julie has made watching and listening to young children totally understandable and meaningful. With its illuminating examples, the book shows how you can best tune into and respond effectively to young childrens conversations. There will be ample time for discussion and reflection on what has been seen, ultimately coming to personal decisions about how best to tune in to children’s current thinking and respond in ways that are of benefit to their learning and development. Furthermore, this book would also be an excellent reflection resource for consolidate teachers who wish to continue enhancing their own practice.
