Between these three books – the Astra Militarum 8th Edition Codex, Psychic Awakening: The Greater Good, and the Imperial Armour Compendium – you should have all the rules on hand you’ll need for your army. Then again, if you’re not in a tearing hurry, it might be better to hold on for the 9th Editioncodexto come along. We can’t make that call for you – may the Emperor guide your decision. As a guard collector and, ahem, occasional guard painter I’m relieved. They look pretty good, they have the same base size and look like they’ll work with the old models. Steadfast Leviathan is the one doing some legwork here, giving a bit more motivation to take a lone super heavy. Minor thing I will mention is that I notice that they have no horizontal transversal on these guns. I have a feeling that would be a ‘realistic’ detail to have but that would probably result in less clean of a design so I don’t mind over much. The Astra Militarum are receiving major reinforcements with the Cadia Stands Army Set , which comes with a massive 28 entirely new models, a very fancy special-edition codex, a set of datacards, and transfers.

Cadian Command Squads have such a proud history of command that almost all Astra Militarum field officers follow their example. Regimental standard held high, these veterans remind their soldiers of Cadia’s tragic sacrifice – ensuring that even those troops not recruited from the bastion world can take Vengeance for Cadia .Full Payload is far and away the winner here, the only real question is whether, in the long run, it beats out just taking two Weapon Experts. Super-Heavy Aces Not included in the army set, but revealed in Saturday’s stream and WarCom article, are the new Commissar and Heavy Weapons team models. We don’t yet know when these (or any further new Imperial Guard models) will be released, or their cost.

If you’ve just been introduced to a galaxy filled with near-immortal super-soldiers, intergalactic alien invaders, and actual demons and your first thought was, “Well what if I just wanted to play normal people?,” then Astra Militarum is the faction for you. Stratagem – Send in the Next Wave – 2CP: At the end of your movement phase, set up a VALHALLAN INFANTRY unit that was wholly destroyed earlier in the battle again, within 6″ of a board edge and more than 9″ from any enemy units. You have to pay reinforcement points for this. Resplendent in golden armour atop his cybernetic horse Konstantin, Lord Solar Leontus is effectively the new ‘big boss’ of the Imperial Guard. So, if you want the new Imperial Guard models and rules, this may be a “must-have” for you. Be sure to watch the video below for all the details! The Chimera is GW’s hilarious parody of America’s Bradley AFV, which is pretty much a self-satirizing vehicle in the first place. It’s a transport tank covered in anti-infantry guns, and is nifty for lobbing an infantry squad at distant objectives without them being as in danger of being blown away before they reach their destination. This is a useful thing for smaller-medium armies in particular. Sneaky build tips There are also lots more options for some of the bigger kit that is going to be rolling onto the battlefield for the Astra Militarum. The new Sentinels are looking ace and can be built open-topped or close, based on the battlefield role you want them to take on. Get those chainswords ready! Units that Remain Stationary in their movement phase get to treat their Lasguns and Hot-shot lasguns as Heavy 2 on that shooting phase. During previous editions of the game, theGuard have come in at various different spots in the queue of factions to receive their new codex – but, since they came second-to-last in 9th, the chances are that this army will be one of the later codex releases this time around, too. Regimental Doctrine – Heirloom Weapons: Add 6″ to the range of rapid-fire and heavy weapons with a base range of 24″ or more.

In addition to the miniatures contained in the Army Launch Set, two more classic units are getting a well-earned update. The Deathmask of Ollanius: Gives an INFANTRY model a 4++ and lets them heal d3 wounds at the start of your turn once per battle. Used to have a busted combo on an Ogryn Bodyguard, now doesn’t really have a role. D+

Redsnot is proud of his position as least-worst grot, so when Runtherd Killaskun dies, he thinks it’s his chance to really show his mettle. Unfortunately for Redsnot, Da Red Gobbo has swooped in to usurp him! Surely Redsnot won’t stand up to the greatest hero of grot-kind, will he? Especially, when Da Red Gobbo is all that stands between the grots and a planet of bloodthirsty Chaos-worshippers… This desert world is beset by dust storms at all times, so it’s no wonder their Astra Militarum regiment has such an affinity for staying inside their tanks. Staying still on this hot world means death, which shows itself in their Regimental Doctrine Swift as the Wind. This rule lets your Infantry shoot their non-heavy weapons after moving as well as gets rid of any penalties for Vehicles which move and shoot. Their other rules also focus on movement, especially Vehicle movement, making them an ideal fit for a mobile tank division. Like most 40K factions, there are many ways of theming a Guard infantry army. You might want hordes of expendable infantry fixing bayonets and dying like heroes, you might be a complete tank nut who wants to paint as few troops as possible, or you might be keen to do an elite force of special forces Tempestus Scions. The thing is, all of those things are doable but not exactly beginner friendly (because they involve, respectively, a horrifying number of dudes to paint, dire board control, and a silly degree of system mastery to be effective). Because of that, I will henceforth assume that you are building the classic, balanced force.
