Being the son of a very famous actor, it would be very easy to believe that he surfs off the back of this, but I genuinely believe that this is not the case.

Kemp read a lovely thing in a self-help book after the tumours – that “every cell in your body is replaced every seven years. On 19 November 2020, Kemp featured as a guest panellist on the ITV Daytime show Loose Women and was part of the first all male panel in the show's 21-year history. The broadest message is that simply having conversations can help men overcome the sense of feeling entrapped by life.

Get Me Out of Here in 2019, also recently issued a plea to the Government to improve mental health support for young people. In 2019, Roman won over yet more fans coming third in I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here, with his uncanny impressions of everyone from Ant and Dec to his mate Harry Styles. But then, in the pandemic, my best mate Joe took his own life and it turned my whole world upside down. Now, I’m not saying that Tony was bullied, as such” – though in the book Kemp does say the behaviour “tipped over into bullying” – “but he took all the banter. Roman teamed up with Legal and General Group Protection’s ‘Be Well, Get Better, Be Supported’ campaign in 2021 as their mental health ambassador. The lifelong Arsenal supporter grafted his way to Capital’s highly coveted Breakfast slot - and pulled in record-beating listeners with his cheeky sense of humour. The reality is the contents (or at least the first two thirds of it, I'll get to why I didn't finish it) consist of some basic discussion of the topic but I actually felt the effectiveness of even this was undermined by the way in which the author switches to discussion of random things that have happened in his life, many of which being subjectively amazing experiences many could only dream of. Thanks to this prominent position, Roman has teamed up with a number of companies and educational establishments to promote the awareness of male suicide and mental health. However, the report also revealed that 45 per cent of men say they feel worried or low more regularly than ten years ago, and are consequently twice as likely to feel suicidal.

The worst sections of the book could be considered insulting to those of us who've suffered with mental ill health. Roman Kemp is one of the UK’s most promising television and radio broadcasters, first breaking onto the scene on Capital FM radio. The book is at its best when Roman is being open about the mental health issues that he has faced, particularly about how he has coped with chemical depression. This is the point at which I gave up on the book because he is clearly not thinking in much depth about how this might land with ordinary folk.Followed by the short chapters on what’s important to Roman and why they’re good for his mental health really made me think about what’s good for me and my own health.

Born in Los Angeles to famous parents – Martin Kemp of Spandau Ballet fame and Shirlie Holliman, a backing singer for Wham! For a unique double act, why not book Roman alongside his father Martin Kemp; perfect for corporate awards events. It’s no coincidence that on the same day we lost Joe, the police force found seven other men his age in the same situation.
