Afterwards, Phillip enters Stefan's castle to find the entire population asleep, due to the sleeping spell the fairies has cast upon. He heads up the stairs to the castle's tallest tower, where he finds Aurora, still in her ageless sleep. He bends over to give Aurora true love's first kiss, which finally awakens her from her eternal slumber. The princess smiles as she learns that her love and her betrothed are one and the same. By greater extent, this allows the entire people in the castle to wake up from their sleeping spell, including King Hubert, King Stefan, Queen Leah, Minstrel, and the Herald. Once he saves Aurora, their family, and the whole kingdom from their sleeping spell, Phillip heads downstairs with Aurora, arm in arm, and reunite their family, now awaken from their sleep. Unlike the original 1959 film, he plays a less active role in the film, but he does meet Aurora and the two fall madly in love. When Aurora falls into her deep slumber by the curse, Maleficent finds Phillip and takes him to the castle, hoping his brief meeting with her will be enough to wake her. Unfortunately, it does not, but Maleficent's own motherly love to Aurora as a daughter is enough to wake her. Phillip bravely fights the creature in defense of his love and his friend, but in doing so, he is marked to be killed by the emblem by its medallion. Christened Philippos, Philip was his parents’ only son, after four daughters. In this same movie, it was going to be revealed that his birthday is on August 18. Philip’s nationality remained ambiguous – and was the subject of fervent political debate – in the run-up to his marriage. But eventually, in 1972, some 25 years after his naturalisation and in the year of his silver wedding anniversary, Lord Dilhorne, the former lord chancellor, replied to an inquiry from Philip’s uncle Lord Mountbatten.

At the end of it all, as Prince Albert wrote: “The position of a prince consort requires that a husband should entirely sink his own individual interests in that of his wife.” Philip, with a less assertive wife than Victoria but also a weak constitutional position, maintained a stubborn profile. And he ended by printing his own name as well as his own bloodline on some of the generations after him: Mountbatten-Windsor. For an exile who began with so few cards to play, it was no small accomplishment.

Like the first Prince, however, Phillip awakens his love interest from her sleeping curse by giving her a true love's kiss. His parents’ marriage would eventually break down, with his father moving to Monte Carlo and becoming a melancholy figure who died in 1944. His four sisters, all much older and more like aunts to him, married Germans.
