A. We do not recommend using this product for lawns. Choose a fertiliser that has been specifically designed for lawn use such as Aftercut ultra green Plus or SafeLawn. It’s easy for plants to absorb and take up, and is slow-release to benefit plants for months at a time. Bonemeal– animal bones from the farming (and fishing) industry are treated and ground into smaller particles. These provide calcium as well as phosphorous.

If your plant is vulnerable to deer, moles, or squirrels, using blood will keep them away due to its unpleasant smell. However, if used excessively, too much blood meal adds too much nitrogen in the soil, which may nitrogen-burn plants or kill the plants. Therefore, it’s essential to use blood meal fertilizer in moderation. Benefits Of Using Blood Meal In Your Garden Growmore or National growmore to give its proper title, is an inorganic alternative to fish, blood and bone. It is a relatively modern invention due to necessity during the Second World War, as part of the dig for victory campaign, where potash was in great shortage. Potash was normally minded in Germany and as a result of war it was not readily available, and alternatives had to be found. Dry, granular or powder feeds come in two varieties. Use the spring/summer formula now for a lusher lawn. The autumn sort is designed to build up roots and toughen the grass up for winter. If the soil has been dry, it may take longer for the fertiliser to dissolve, so you can either provide water or leave it a little longer until the next feed. More specifically, this feed doesn’t give the plants a huge jolt of nutrients but acts as a good base and all-rounder, ensuring that the plants are never undernourished.

Blood meal is a slaughterhouse by-product, where the blood that are generated from pigs, sheep and cattle are used. The blood is dried and grounded into powder form, and because it comes from blood, it has a high nitrogen and iron content. Nitrogen is important for new, shoot growth and helps in controlling how carbon dioxide is absorbed. The carbon dioxide and water will combine in photosynthesis to produce sugar, which the plant uses to release energy. Blood meal is even better for vegetable gardens with greens like kale, Brussel sprouts, and lettuce. These veggies are nitrogen-hungry and require this nutrient for plant growth. Blood meal is a dried, inert powder made from animal blood, which is used as a nitrogen amendment for garden soil. The fertilizer is a slaughterhouse by-product, typically made from cow’s blood, but it can also come from hogs. Please note that dogs are attracted to the smell of fish, blood and done, so they will dig around your garden if they detect it. Try to keep dogs away from the product, as you do not want holes in your garden or your containers turned over, making a mess. WHAT IS GROWMORE? A: You can, but it will be more bio-available to plants if it’s worked into the top few inches of the soil. Blood meal is especially useful if you’re using the same gardening bed year after year. Most plants tend to deplete the soil of essential nutrients. Therefore, in the long-term, blood meal application is an effective way to maintain proper nutrient content. I have used both products with great results and I have no preference. The application rate is quite similar. Less for fish, blood and bone and so you can save some money. The costs are roughly the same and so you are spoilt for choice.

So, if I understand well growmore and blood, fish and bone are both good fertilizer. But for organic gardening, it is best to use blood, fish, and bone. Now how will growmore affect the quality of the plant? I think that is the great debate in my mind, can a fertilizer affect the quality of the end product? Fish, blood and bone can be applied every 4-5 weeks as this is how long it typically takes for the contents to fully dissolve into the soil. Fish meal, along with the other constituents contains a lot of nitrogen, which is taken up as nitrate by the plant roots. This is ideal for growing leafy vegetable, whilst the phosphorous content is great for root formation. It makes plants grow stronger and healthier. Fish meal tends to have a nitrogen; phosphorous and potassium ratio (NPK) of 10: 6: 2 and it contains some trace elements. BLOOD MEALSoil bacteria will use some of the fertiliser for their own growth and wellbeing, which will encourage the plant to develop faster and healthier. Blood is best applied in spring to ensure the proper growth of vegetables, flowers, and plants. The good thing about blood meal is that you only need to add a little to reap its benefits. It is best to apply fish, blood and bone before plants are actively growing, in March, which is an ideal month. This will give enough feed for 4 to 6 weeks, which is enough time for the plants to start growing. You can repeat dosage in early summer to give the plants an additional boost. Treat the lawn to a good feed now. If you do nothing else to your lawn to brace it for the summer, this is the job you shouldn’t miss out. It will beef up the grass and in a couple of weeks, you won’t see the gaps where weeds or moss were evicted.

New plants: Once you've made a planting hole fork a small amount of bone meal for plants into the hole. You can also add it to the compost and soil that will be used as the planting mixture. Water thoroughly. Thanks for reading our guide to fish, blood and bone feed. Find out more about the team behind DIY GardeningThey are both just as effective as each other, the choice of which one to use is based on your preference. They are both short term fertilisers, only provided enough food for plants for 4 to 6 weeks. If you are looking for more long term fertilizers, which release their nutrients over a long period of time, then I suggest you read my article on slow-release fertilisers. WHAT IS FISH, BLOOD AND BONE FERTILIZERS? My pet hate is liquid fertilisers that are so strong, they burn the foliage or, worse, get washed away as soon as it rains. Fish, blood and bone works best when it’s worked into the soil with either a trowel, hoe or small rake.
