Making use of some intriguing Scottish ingredients from the coast, like seaweed, ground ivy, gorse flowers and scurvy grass (which sailors used to eat when suffering from scurvy for its precious Vitamin C), they've created a superb summer tipple capturing the essence of the seaside. The result of what could be multiple collaborations with the Heriot-Watt University, every Edinburgh Seaside Gin mini bottle is flavour infused with marine plants found along the coastline, which includes bladderwrack, ground ivy, and scurvy grass. Both have supporting herbs in the botanical list, but you can actually taste the olives and rosemary in the Gin Mare.

Edinburgh Gin Classic Review - From the Gin Shelf Edinburgh Gin Classic Review - From the Gin Shelf

Inspired by the East Coast shoreline near Edinburgh, Seaside Gin is a small-batch gin which harnesses the essence of the Scottish seaside to evoke a day at the beach. Largely as a result of Edinburgh Gin’s incredible success, Spencerfield Spirit Company was sold to Ian Macleod Distillers in 2016. They also give a nod to the Scottish Art Deco movement during gin’s glory days in the 1920’s by way of the bottle label and design. I absolutely love the original Edinburgh Gin with tonic, but the Seaside takes it up a notch even still. It’s during this period that our love of gin began, with a ready supply of spices imported via the dock. The distiller’s recommended garnish of orange peel is where I’d go too, enhancing the citrus in the gin. The decline in popularity of gin meant that there were no gin distilleries in Edinburgh by the 1970s. But with gin’s resurgence, the city is now bustling with many great brands including Pickering’s, Electric Spirits Co. In June 2014 they established their two gin stills and visitor experience and bar in central Edinburgh, working in partnership with Heriot Way Dept of Brewing and Distilling to establish a centre of gin excellence and innovation in Edinburgh.

Edinburgh Gin The Home of Edinburgh Gin

I gravitated to the "seaside" variation of their product lineup after a wholly pleasant experience with Gin Mare, and frankly I think I was expecting another riff on the same general style: a gin that doesn't lead with citrus or juniper but instead focuses on a core of savory flavors. With the gin originally created at Langley Distillery, they launched their own distillery and visitor centre in 2014. To me, weird is always intriguing, and gonzo ingredients will usually steer me toward purchasing something—maybe they hold a little too much sway over me, honestly. Edinburgh Gin is a nod to the days when the city of Edinburgh was a hub of Northern distilling expertise. If bladderwrack doesn't sound like a condition that would bring a man to the ER doubled over and moaning in pain, I don't know what does. There is obviously still bold juniper in there but the balance between this and the shoreline botanicals is perfect. Edinburgh Gin Classic is recommended to be served as a gin and tonic with a premium tonic water and a twist of orange peel to garnish. Seaside Gin is a delicately balanced gin, featuring foraged botanicals including scurvy grass, ground ivy and bladderwrack. Juniper and citrus remain the dominant flavours but the floral notes open up a bit with less of a pepperiness and heat, as you’d expect.
