Each continent has there own native species of fish. Each fish has their own classification and characteristics that make them unique. McElligot’s Poolis a classic Dr. Seuss book. As Marco is fishing in McElligot’s tiny pool, he’s daydreaming of all the fantastic things that might be caught. It’s a wonderful story of patience and optimism. This book helped reinforce to my son that fishing for little fish is fun. This is very helpful because they are much easier to catch. The father and son each take turns catching a big fish and a little fish and both are equally celebrated. When I’m out fishing with him now, he even quotes the book, “A little fish for me!” with a big grin on his face.

Jangles: A Big Fish Story” By David Shannon – This tall tale shares the tale of a big fish with an even bigger story. Follow the story of a local legend and the lures he collected over the years. 18. “Down by the River: A Family Fly Fishing Story” If you have a child who loves fishing consider adding some children’s books that focus on fishing. With his father missing after a fishing boat accident, teenage Jake must step up to support his family. The characters in this novel about growing up in a New England fishing town will draw students in. 19. Between Two Skies by Joanne O’Sullivan (7–9) In Sophie’s FishJake is very worried about watching Sophie’s pet fish for the weekend. He agonizes over not knowing what to do or how to take care of the fish. When Sophie arrives he’s feeling better about taking care of the fish until he finally meets Yo-Yo.

NOTE: Although young children who are under 13 year old do not need a licence to fish, the person supervising them needs the proper fishing licence to take hold of the rod or to help the child fish with it. Gone Fishing: A Novel in Verse” by Tamera Will Wissinger – This middle-grade novel in verse follows a group of friends on a fishing trip and explores themes of friendship, family, and growing up.
