Description

As with any diagnosis, there is a broad range of traits, so some will ring true and others not to each reader. But the things that were true in my experience were so spot on, and married to some really tender pictures, that I shouldn't have been surprised when I felt my eyes spring a leak once or twice. Towards the end of All Cats Have Asperger Syndrome, one sentence says, “there is a little bit of Asperger’s in us all.” While Hoopman thought this statement was empathetic in 2006, many people have since found it incorrect and “insulting to those on the spectrum as it belittles the very real challenges they face daily.” Their passion for researching something they love” leading to them reaching “the top of their chosen fields.” For example, people with autism may research topics such as films, science, inventions, and planes and might want to become actors or actresses, professors, inventors, plane-spotters, or pilots. All Cats are on the Autism Spectrum is written with the very best intentions to reflect the wishes of the autistic community in language and concepts. I know that my choices will not please everyone and that views on language will continue to evolve. However words do matter, and sometimes we get things wrong, and that’s ok if we are gracious about respecting the views of others and are prepared to use their preferred language once we know what it is.

Their strengths and challenges representing “tangles of colour, each a little different from the next.” They are definitely beautiful books and delightful to look at, filled from cover to cover with cute cat and dog images. However, the books are more than just that. Kathy shines a positive light on the sometimes-quirky behaviours that are endearing in pets and helps us recognise the beauty and joy we can discover in diversity. She encourages us to accept ourselves and others just as we are. A recommendation by Haley Moss The pictures of all the cute cats, together with the short but precise description of what it’s like to be on the autism spectrum, makes it the perfect book to learn about autism in a gentle, heart warming and humorous way, regardless of whether you are on the spectrum, a parent or other family member, classmate, friend, colleague or professional in the autism field. The pictures call for both seriousness and laughter, and it also gives the reader an opportunity to talk about a difficult topic in an easy and enjoyable way. Autism' is beautifully articulated and illustrated by our feline associates. This book captures our spirit, highlights our individuality, easily explains in an image, so many of our playful and meaningful behaviours, as well as showcases our strengths. It's a humorous account of a serious love affair! People with autism can stay awake at night and wonder “what they did wrong and what they could have done differently.”

Their abilities and preferences “can change from hour to hour, day to day, depending on moods, foods, and even the weather.”

A Danish foreword by Anne Skov Jensen

The descriptions of autism are astute, humorous and encouraging for the autistic person and their family.’ I first published All Cats Have Asperger Syndrome in 2006 and All Dogs Have ADHD in 2009. Fast forward 11 and 14 years and although both books were still selling well, the layouts were dated and some of the text needed tweaking to represent current views and terminology. The biggest criticism I had was that they were written with male pronouns urn:lcp:allcatshaveasper0000hoop:epub:37948024-cab8-429b-b74b-e765a6ef4de3 Foldoutcount 0 Identifier allcatshaveasper0000hoop Identifier-ark ark:/13960/s2nsjt9p3c7 Invoice 1652 Isbn 9781843104810

Most people with Aspergers are male. Frankly, I didn't catch it. Smiles from the book’s feline friends were contagious within my house; my mom and dad shared the magic of cats on the autism spectrum with me. I couldn’t stop thinking about the many ways All Cats Have Asperger Syndrome made me smile as an autistic teenager, and the book loyally sits in my joy-filled autism library well into adulthood. Haley Moss is an autistic attorney, author, artist and advocate.
