Observers usually nominate two variables, exemplified by the following news excerpts about the 2012 Wimbledon final: Through examples of religion and the placebo effect, the book highlights how self-belief in your own ability directly impacts performance. Exceptional performers all have capacity for irrational optimism. 3. X-ray vision A cookie set by YouTube to measure bandwidth that determines whether the user gets the new or old player interface. But when scientists ran a bunch of tests on the English national team’s players, they found the best player, Desmond Douglas, to have the slowest reaction times. There's another very interesting chapter which has some new ways to think about performance enhancing substances and methods. When is enhancement a good thing, when and why in other circumstances is it not?Seen in this context, Mozart’s achievements seem suddenly rather different. He no longer looks like a musician zapped with special powers that enabled him to circumvent practice; rather, he looks like somebody who embodies the rigors of practice. He set out on the road to excellence very early in life, but now we can see why.” Bringing Ping Pong to Old St, Shoreditch, a social hub made for drinking, dining and ping-ponging until late, with a strong emphasis on quality music and DJs. In addition he completely debunks the racial stereotyping attributed to perceived racial dominance in sports such as sprinting and distance running with scientific experiments and their accompanying data. A brilliant book and a must-read for anyone interested in excellence... and science! A very firm Four Star, 9 out of 12 read Through his experience as an international tennis table champion, Matthew Syed looks at what it takes to become the best; and debunks some cherished myths of innate talent along the way. Bounce is a compelling argument that champions are not born, they are made – and their success is down to two important things: opportunity and practice. Who is it for?

Wimbledon articulates this essential truth with rare eloquence. The small few vying for glory, the stars we cheer on Centre Court, represent the shattered dreams of thousands. And this is as it should be. It is brutal, but it is also, in its way, beautiful.” It’s noteworthy that many of the contemporaries of Galileo (inventor of the modern telescope) really did think there was something morally dubious about the telescope; that it was taking humanity beyond the powers expressly sanctioned by God. They were the moral conservatives of their day. It is not difficult to imagine that those currently opposing genetic enhancement may one day be seen in the same light.” Instead of wasting the resources of his prefrontal cortex on trying to get the ball spin right, he can use his brain to think about tactics, because the movements of his hand are taken care of. Lesson 2:You can be inspiredto work hard bythe most trivial details. Purposeful practice is about striving for what is just out of reach and not quite making it; it is about grappling with tasks beyond current limitations and falling short again and again”.

You see, you’re making a terrible mistake when you compare Mozart to other six-year-olds. You should instead compare him to other people who have practiced about 3,500 hours. Because that’s exactly how much time Mozart had spent in front of his piano by the time he was six! Overall, a highly enjoyable book and compulsory reading for anyone of any age group. And coming from a person who has achieved success – I say it is a very credible source of information and inspiration. Intellectually stimulating and hugely enjoyable at a stroke…challenged some of my most cherished beliefs about life and success. Our book shelf is always bursting at the seams with the latest reads. So, in the spirit of sharing, we decided to create a book club. Read on for our review of Bounce by Matthew Syed. What is Bounce all about? A great book – should be compulsory reading all parents and teachers. It has changed the way I think about encouraging my children and work teammates – praising their efforts and hard work rather than their innate "skill". As an advisor to owner- managed businesses, I see the 10,000 hour/10 year experience rule being lived out in many ways. For example most professionals spend their 20s and early 30s mastering the technical aspects of their profession, and the next decade mastering management and business skills so that by the mid to late 40s they are at the height of their powers. This book could be called The T-Myth (with apologies to Michael Gerber, author of The E-Myth)- the T standing for talent of course. It explains in scientific terms of some of the principles set out by Gerber in his book and it has helped me to understand why some of my most successful clients have done so well, often after years of struggling and learning from their mistakes (i.e. "purposeful practice" in Syed's words).
