To get some additional tips on how to style hair with volume in mind, we spoke with celebrity stylist Dimitris Giannetos. One thing to keep in mind when applying volumizing products or using tools like round brushes or teasing combs is to focus your attention at the root. “Especially when blow-drying your hair, use these tools at the root for a pump of volume,” says Giannetos. Once upon a time, there were such things as hair perfumes, but who needs that when you’ve got scented dry shampoo to conceal any odors from a night on the town. The barrel of this blow drying brush is coated in 24-karat gold, which acts as an excellent heat conductor. This ensures that the heat is evenly distributed, which will minimize hair damage and provide better styling results overall. It also has boar tech bristles surrounded by charcoal-infused bristles that help absorb moisture and enhance volume.

This spray is incredibly lightweight, but it adds immediate volume. It also acts as a dry shampoo, which makes it a great option for taking with you if you’re traveling since it can do it all. Unlike other dry shampoos, it won’t leave a matte or powdery finish on your strands. It works best when it is sprayed right at the root so that it can soak up excess sebum and add a natural-looking lift. On top of making hair look and feel fuller, this product works overtime to cleanse the scalp and remove build-up that can often weigh down strands — all without stripping it of its essential oils. Plus, it provides hairstyles with more longevity since strands are lighter, stronger, and healthier overall. Not to mention, it comes in a super aesthetically pleasing bottle that’s sure to upgrade your shower shelf.Tapioca or rice powder: Dry shampoos tend to rely on a handful of the same ingredients for oil-absorbing purposes, but the often-used cornstarch can be both too heavy and mattifying for fine hair. Instead, she suggests seeking out formulas that rely on lighter-weight ingredients. Tapioca and rice powders are two of her favorites. The former is a key ingredient in the Rahua Voluminous Dry Shampoo. However, finding the right shampoo is no easy feat. According to master hairstylist and founder of Yvey Salon, Yvey Valcin, “Beautiful, volumized hair starts by treating your hair right, knowing your texture, and using the right products.” To make your life easier (and to ensure your hair is being treated with care), we did the heavy lifting to find those right products, researching and analyzing the best volumizing shampoos for every hair type and texture. What We Don’t Love: While it goes on sheer, this dry shampoo is not as volumizing as other dry shampoos. This product is also completely humidity-proof, and was cited by celebrity stylist Chris Appleton on a tutorial Zoom hosted by the brand as one of the products that he used to create and hold Jennifer Lopez’s hair style during her iconic Super Bowl performance.

I f your strands need both a little volume boost and some extra TLC, this option has plenty of good-for-your hair ingredients. I love this dry shampoo because it is gentle yet effective, making it safe for all hair types to use, including fine,” says NYC-based celebrity hairstylist Christina Giarrizzo. “It is made with plant-based ingredients, so it is hypoallergenic and won’t cause any irritation to sensitive scalps. Plus, it also leaves behind no residue, so it won’t look super awkward after applying it on your hair.” If you've sliced out the silicones and your hair still looks sad after washing, Garbutt recommends adding in a scalp scrub or clarifying shampoo once weekly to remove any build-up of product (especially that dry shampoo you love) and oil. After a recommendation? Living Proof's charcoal-based Triple Detox formula is the beauty team's unequivocal favourite.Sure, in theory, blondes don’t have to worry about any tell-tale white residue and can pretty much use any dry shampoo. But this one has the added benefit o f having subtle violet undertones that work to counteract unwanted yellowing, an issue blondes do have to deal with. It p rotects against UV damage, too, always a good thing. Stylist and founder of Phenix Salon Suites Gina Rivera says both this version—and the accompanying option for dark hair—are great for those with fine strands. “It’s made with very lightweight rice starch, and is also rich in vitamin E, essential fatty acids, and antioxidants, all of which are terrific for the hair,” she says. Now that you know how to use dry shampoo, particularly when you want to add fullness, here are seven stylist-recommended options for helping limp strands look their most voluminous: Arrojo Refinish Dry Shampoo Since this hot brush is so narrow, it’s easy to get super close to the scalp so that it can lift the hair from the root. It has a 1.25-inch barrel and nylon bristles that are 0.5-centimeters in length for extra precision, making it great for styling bangs. The bristles also work to eliminate any tangles, smoothing the strands so your hair looks incredibly silky.

What We Love: This hypoallergenic shampoo is formulated with biotin, which helps reduce hair thinning. I just make sure to coat my ends with the brand's lightweight conditioner before lathering up with the shampoo, which helps offset some of the potential dryness. But overall, it makes my hair look so full and lifted. I've been getting compliments on my hair since I started using the system—and I honestly think a lot of it is this ultra-simple yet effective shampoo. Travel-friendly - as we mentioned in our previous article on beach bag essentials, dry shampoo is also quite travel-friendly - it's ideal for trips when traditional washing is inconvenient. Any dry shampoo that contains aerosol should be stored away from heat (like radiators or in direct sunlight). You should also avoid storing any products containing aerosol on the dashboard of a car where it can avoid getting too hot, or leave aerosol containers in a gym bag of your car for long periods of time where it can again, get too hot.If you’re someone who works out frequently, you know all too well the struggle of a stinky scalp. Sweat droplets can latch onto your roots and stubbornly linger until it’s time for a true hair wash—but in the meantime, you can trust the Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo to eliminate odor. The starch and microporous mineral blend soak up oil, yes, but also bad odors, so your hair looks, smells, and feels totally rejuvenated.

Don’t be alarmed when this dry shampoo comes out white. Gently rub it into your roots with your fingertips, and in about two minutes, you’ll be good to go. Do you use a ton of hair product in your styling routine? Your scalp might have some build-up that needs a clarifying shampoo before you start with the volume hair products. “I suggest using a clarifying or detox shampoo to get rid of all of the buildup and gunk that can accumulate from products,” says Eaddy. “This will give your hair some natural volume as it's no longer being weighed down.” The best shampoos can accomplish a lot. They can help with hair growth or brighten blonde—but sometimes, you simply want a formula for when hair looks a little, well, lifeless. In those times, a great volume-boosting shampoo can be your hair hero. Generally speaking, volumizing hair products are safe for hair. Just be sure they don’t contain sulfates or paraffin since these can dry out hair and ultimately make strands brittle and damaged. Aside from being mindful of your volumizing shampoo’s ingredients, it’s important to make sure you’re not overwashing your hair. “Shampooing twice a week is usually good,” Viola says. This ensures that the scalp is not stripped of its natural oils. A dirty scalp generally has an odor, so finding a dry shampoo that absorbs any odors and leaves a fresh-smelling scent is key,” Giarrizzo explains. However, if you’re sensitive to scents, you may want to opt for a fragrance-free version.

IT’S GOOD TO HAVE OPTIONS

Since it is so gentle and natural, it’s completely safe to use on color-treated hair, even if you wash your hair every day (or a few times per week). It won’t strip the color and will actually work to enhance the hues and prolong the the length of the dye since it invisibly coats the hair shafts. It also adds moisture thanks to cocamide MEA, which is an ingredient comprised of the fatty acids that are naturally found in coconut oil. We tested this dry shampoo for fine hair ourselves, and we instantly fell in love with the bombshell volume it added to our strands. Once we examined the label, we were pleasantly surprised at the emphasis on gentle, natural ingredients (think: oat milk, corn and rice starches, and silica, which soothe inflamed scalps without compromising on volume and cleansing). Color protection - it prolongs colored hair vibrancy by reducing washing frequency, allowing you to keep your hair color for longer. First, by removing oil and dead skin cells that make the hair appear limp, fine hair immediately looks fuller,” Frederic Fekkai, celebrity hairstylist and founder of FEKKAI, explains. And interestingly, this isn’t the time for a super-hydrating formula. “Good volumizing shampoos should have minimum levels of conditioners and oils to avoid weighing down the hair. Lastly, look for ingredients that stimulate circulation and/or plump up fine strands.” What We Don’t Love: The addition of tea tree oil cleanses the scalp, but also has the potential for irritation.
