Madvillain is a legendary duo featuring masked rapper MF Doom and intrepid producer Madlib, elusive heroes of the hip-hop underground. Madvillainy is the only album by MC/producer duo Madvillain, featuring MF DOOM rapping and Madlib producing. Despite being a heavy underground release, it made it to number 179 on the US Billboard 200, and has since been recognised as a classic album. Madvillainy is most definitely one of the best Hip Hop albums ever made and MF Doom and Madlib came together to create something truly special and they both complimented each other absolutely brilliantly. It really was the perfect collaboration and remains one of the best hip-hop collaborations ever.

The duo’s first and only album, 2004’s Madvillainy, became one of the most critically acclaimed rap albums of all time. A remix album titled Madvillainy 2: The Madlib Remix followed in 2008. Although a Madvillainy 2 had been rumoured for many years, Madlib told a publication in 2012 it is unlikely:Hello there, I bought a 2006 RE which was advertised as a sealed '04 original US press. This album grew on me SO much since I first heard. When I first heard it, I was just starting to hear some abstract hip hop, but I hadn't heard much and I thought that most of what I heard was overrated. Also, I thought that Madlib was overrated at the time. My only real motivation for listening to this was that I really liked Operation: Doomsday, so I was interested to hear more of MF Doom's material. On my first listen, I thought this was overrated. It seemed decent, but not really something I would ever listen to, considering all of the other great albums to listen to. I probably gave it a higher rating than I thought it deserved because of the hype. The next time that I listened to it, I liked it more. I still thought that it was overrated and that Operation: Doomsday was quite a bit better, but it was starting to grow on me. In the time between my second listen and my third listen, I dug through Madlib's discography more. While I was mainly a fan of his "normal" beats at first, I started to realize that everything he produced was good, even the "weird" stuff. It was on that third listen that I started to love Madvillainy. I was really starting to agree with the hype. I bumped my rating up to 4.25/5. I still preferred Operation: Doomsday though. Every listen after that got better and better until I rated it 4.5/5 and I decided that it's better than Operation: Doomsday. So, it took a while to grow on me, but it's better than if it never grew on me at all.

Any truly great hip-hop album's strength lies in its production - Illmatic, 36 Chambers and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy are my favourite hip-hop albums and I think that they're all perfectly produced and I'd most definitely add Madvillany into that exclusive club. It really is a masterclass of hip-hop production and it's all down to Madlib. His unpredictable, inventive, innovative beats combined with Doom's brilliant rapping, flow, delivery and lyrical abilities is absolutely fantastic. Madlib lays down the canvas and paints a wonderful picture, but he still leaves space for Doom to express himself and put his own distinctive mark on the painting.
