So, not a song about a poor girl, but a song of hope and how you can rise up no matter how far down you started. It would also later appear in Terry Gilliam's 1998 movie adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson's 1972 gonzo novel Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Due to the song's upbeat, paranoid mood, it was used for the scene of obsessively drug-using protagonists Raoul Duke and Dr. Gonzo escaping a "District Attorneys convention on narcotics and dangerous drugs". It also appears as the last song in the movie's G-rated trailer, mainly accompanying Duke's wild car ride to have Dr. Gonzo catch a plane in time, a scene where in the R-rated trailer and in the actual film, Viva Las Vegas by Dead Kennedys was used instead. That same year, P.J. Proby also covered the song. I believe this is another amazingly on point and nuanced commentary on the insanity that follows emotionally abusive relationships. The abuser has no anxieties, no emotional pain, or salience/memory for that matter, so the survivor appears to be the crazy one, obsessed with the abuse and that buzzword that seems to ignite arguments about diagnosing people without a degree, etc. funny how you say the words domestic violence, abuse, abuse survivor and boom the subject changes. Anyways, I especially relate to her midnights becoming afternoons, complex PTSD often leads to this phenomenon, whether due to purposeful sleep deprivation by the abuser, or just hyper vigilance associated with the PTSD, along with the fear of facing people, especially your loved ones, whoMama Told Me Not to Come (UK CD2 liner notes). John from Kirkland, WaI once heard a story about this song - I think it was many years ago on the Casey Kasem show - that when they were doing the studio recording, they were looking for a specific echo effect and were not coming up with it. During a break, one of the band members was in the bathroom and noticed the echo in there was what they were looking for! The rest as they say is now history - J Listinn Topp 20 (11.5– 18.5 2000)". Retrieved October 6, 2019.She not only stayed alive, she turned her hard beginnings around, became self sufficient, successful and someone with respect for herself. She didn't let the naysayers and judgers stop her. She's the one sitting in the drivers seat at the end. But really the comedy is just a way to animate the conversation, which – alongside all the unselfconscious sexual candour – ranges forthrightly across colourism, sexism within their families and community, and their recent experiences of being trolled. The show doesn’t stint on gossipy good fun, but it’s got a solid emotional and political core – as the duo’s final flourish, reciting hard-to-write letters to their mums, makes affectingly clear. The mix of chit-chat, liberation sexology and the comedy of cultural identity, is a potent one. Just listening for the 784,654th time....and it's just perfect in every way. Just incredible. The only reason it was remade was to scoop up a boatload of money from a more modern and accepting audience. But it is a completely different song than the other one that sounds slapped together in a few takes without a thought for the meaning.

Nuz from NzNo one seems to have commented on the similarity between the intro of Three Dog Night's version of this song and the intro to CCR's Born on the Bayou. Obviously they borrowed from CCR because the CCR version came out in 1969.

Janetlee from Panama City, FlRandy Newman is a terrific songwriter ! He also has done the theme to the USA Network show, MONK (which stars Tony Shalhoub!) At this point, Randy Newman had yet to release any solo material. When he started recording his own material (starting with his 1968 debut album) many of the songs had already been recorded by others. "Mama Told Me Not to Come" was included on his second album, 12 Songs, which came out around the same time Three Dog Night issued it. Newman had little chart success as an artist in these early years, but Three Dog Night did, and their raucous rendition was the one listeners preferred. Newman at first dismissed them as a "teeny-bopper" band, but later rescinded that statement, saying he liked their version a great deal. The Irish Charts – Search Results – Mama Told Me Not to Come".
