At first, he refused to even kill a walker, concerned that he would come to enjoy it. This shows that Negan was a much less ruthless individual to begin with, one who hadn't killed anyone living. Though he was less ruthless, he was shown to have the same temper that he would show in the apocalypse, having been put on probation for assaulting a man who insulted his wife. The friendlier personality Negan has taken on after his years of imprisonment is closer to the man he was during the time with Lucille during the early months of the apocalypse. The next morning, a blood-covered Negan arrives at the camp demanding a skinsuit for himself with an extra measure because of his humongous balls. He kneels and introduces himself to Alpha. "I'm all in, whatever you want, whatever I got, it's yours", Negan tells her. Alpha leans down to sniff him and shushes him to signal she accepts him.

In the mess hall, Ezekiel and Negan approach Tyler and Ezekiel asks him for help, reminding the young man that he stood up to Pamela in the past and wants out of there as much as they do. Tyler wants to live more, but Negan calls this barely surviving rather than living. Ezekiel suggests that their people and Tyler's can take the guards together, but Tyler reveals that they've already tried that and "the same thing always happens. People who shouldn't die end up dead." They only have two choices here: survival or death. Tyler believes that if the Coalition tries this, they will all die. Ezekiel suggests that, alternatively, they can try this and they all live and they only have each other. If they lose faith in that and the idea that they can change this if they want to, they're as good as dead anyway. However, one resident that walks by recognizes Sebastian and alerts the crowd that he has found him. Negan stays behind to deal with the man and tries to calm him down. The Croat's search for Negan leads him onto a catwalk over the main area of the arena where he observes the carnage below him with amusement. The Croat calls out that there's nothing for Negan to be afraid of as he's safe and it's only him. Hearing a noise, the Croat turns around to find Negan, also armed with a modified nail gun, standing on a lower catwalk. The Croat delightedly greet his "brother" and notes Negan's new weapon of choice, but Negan doesn't respond to him. The Croat recalls hearing about what had happened at the bank which he knew sounded like Negan's handiwork. The Croat also knows that Negan had assumed that he wanted revenge on Negan for blowing off his ear and found common cause with his new friends, but the Croat actually doesn't care, telling Negan that he has another ear. The Croat asks about Lucille and Negan, speaking to his former friend for the first time since they had parted ways, admits that the bat is gone and the Croat correctly guesses that she broke from too many hits to people's heads. Negan's change of heart and attitude was further proven during a blizzard, when Negan willingly abandoned his group of survivors and risked his own life to chase after Judith, who herself began chasing Daryl's dog after it ran off, desperately calling out to her, and used his own winter clothes to keep Judith warm. Nonetheless, Negan still retained his rather crude and straight-forward sense of humor, joking about the "love triangle" between Gabriel, Rosita and Siddiq, and poking fun at Gabriel not being the father of Rosita's child, sarcastically referring to him as " Father, not the father". Instead of rising to the bait however, the Alexandrians tell Negan they know his mannerisms all too well and as a result, no longer fall for such things from him. As a result of his crude humor however, only moments later they mistake Negan sensing a genuine danger as yet another attempt at antagonism before they realize he's not kidding for once. Regardless, Negan seems to have completely changed his ways, showing genuine concern about the well-being of The Kingdom's residents after the storm, asking Michonne about their status. Negan openly admits sympathy for their situation as well, stating that while he doesn't know the people, he knows what they're going through having lost a kingdom.Negan, Maggie and Gabriel lead a herd of walkers to Meridian while disguised among them in masks. Paul starts to lead the herd away from Meridian but is ambushed on several sides by walkers, and is stabbed by Negan and Maggie. Paul falls to the ground and is consumed, and Negan steals his radio so they can keep tabs on the Reapers' communication. Negan stares intently at Eugene before he grabs Dr. Carson and throws him face-first into the furnace, burning him alive. Negan puts his arm around Dwight, saying "Good thing we have a spare Dr. Carson." Negan pays Eugene a visit. He tells Eugene that he doesn't make his invitation lightly and explains that he doesn't need to be scared anymore. Negan points to a watermark on the wall, indicating that the tunnels regularly flood. He suggests they turn around, but Daryl shoots down his idea. In the subway tunnel, Negan and the group encounters a pile of dead bodies, each wrapped in plastic. Daryl removes the plastic from one body and kills the walker when it snaps at him. They observe the walker made no noise because its throat had been slashed. Maggie instructs the group to kill all the walkers so that they can proceed. In Alexandria, Gabriel helps Negan meditate in his cell. Negan compliments him on Rosita and brags that he's heard some interesting things she said outside his cell. Gabriel says that he doesn't care what Rosita said about him, but Negan points out he never said that Rosita mentioned Gabriel. Gabe then leaves, somewhat ruffled.

Ironically, the Crazed Man was even mistaken by many fans to actually be Negan during his brief appearance in " No Sanctuary".Negan has officially killed more main characters than any other antagonist both directly and caused.
