At the start of Choudry’s memoir about faith and football, he equates going to see Manchester United with Friday prayers at the mosque. Not a particularly original thought – there is a banner at the Stretford End that declares “For Every Manc a Religion” – but it’s the way Choudry examines this idea of belonging to something bigger than himself that makes Inshallah United so thoughtful. It’s fun, too, as Choudry muses on growing up as a Muslim Asian Mancunian in late 20th-century Britain. Moon Witch, Spider King ISABELLE: We long for novelty, but only to a point. Too much novelty can easily overwhelm, and so we want to experience that in a safe environment. Historical fiction, especially historical fiction that focuses on retellings, gives us a safe, familiar place from which we can then be stretched in our understanding and imagination. And if Boedhe did decide to become a Christian, Gruoch would’ve been taught about Christianity, she would not be learning about it from local children. She’s still the granddaughter of a king and would be raised as such, especially since at this time Scots could stake a claim to the throne through their maternal line.

They would shrink in horror from my deeds, not revere me for how I had persevered." Gruoch herself feels like a YA heroine who doesn’t know what’s going on because she’s in a world she’s only just discovered. But Gruoch’s not in a new world at any point. This is where she’s been born and raised, she would know exactly what was going on, she would be taught about religion and would grow up expecting to be married off to a man of her father’s choosing. In this novel the fact she’s not makes about half a dozen adults look neglectful.

There are lots of characters in Macbeth , but it is okay to concentrate on the ones that play the biggest part in the story. You just need to know what their relationship is to Macbeth and the important parts they play in the story. In Act 1, Lady Macbeth appears as a powerful, confident character. Although she is at first in control of the situation, by the middle of the play Macbeth begins to make decisions without her knowledge. Hark, she speaks. I will set down what comes from her, to satisfy my remembrance the more strongly." It is well written and fast paced but sometimes boring. The parts of the story that I like the most were not the main focus (like the story of Gruoch’s maid, Sinna, or the Druid grandmother or even the mysterious Ardith…). I know the book is about Gruoch and her raise to power but her character will not stay with me, and I found myself annoyed by her sometimes.

Suspicious – he suspects Macbeth of murder and is worried about his own safety around his old friend.Macduff is devastated when he finds Duncan’s body, but once he suspects Macbeth of murder he risks everything to raise an army against him. ISABELLE: I knew it was going to be complicated as I had done quite a lot of research into the historical characters but almost nothing into the physical world that Gruoch and the others would have lived in. There is much turmoil within the royal court, as everyone wants to get ahead. Gruoch is betrothed to Duncan, who it seems will be king one day, as the heir apparent to King Malcolm II. But when everything goes awry, and Gruoch is forced to run for her life, she ends up on a path she doesn't want, with a husband she doesn't love or respect. She never forgets her childhood love, Macbethad, and the ambition they share. So begins Shakespeare’s Macbeth, the play so infamous that actors fear to speak its name. Its lines have infiltrated modern English, its depictions of witches inspiring many a depiction of the female sorceress. But the standout character of the play was not any of the witches, nor was it Macbeth himself. That spot is reserved for Lady Macbeth.

Gruoch is a young girl whose grandmother was banished when she refused to give up her Druid practices. Now, Gruoch and her mother can only visit her once a year, where they are free to participate in the Druid festivals and rituals. But after Gruoch’s mother dies, she is the one responsible for ensuring her family is safe and comfortable through marriage to Duncan. I wanted to pity Gruoch however she was so feisty and vibrant that I couldn’t help but cheer for her. When she is betrothed to Duncan, heir elect, this appears to confirm the prophecy. She leaves behind her home, her family and her close friend MacBethad, and travels to the royal seat at Scone to embrace her new position. In 2010, Gloria Carreño's play "A Season Before The Tragedy of Macbeth" was produced by British Touring Shakespeare and received the plaudits of critics for "its amazing grasp of language". It was deemed "a feat" and a must-see for fans of Shakespeare. The dramatist Gloria Carreño describes events from the murder of "Lord Gillecomgain", Gruoch Macduff's first husband, to the fateful letter in the first act of Shakespeare's tragedy. Ever since she was a young child, Gruoch was told by her Druid grandmother that she would be Queen of Alba and hold immense power. When she is betrothed to the heir-elect, Duncan, Gruoch leaves everything behind, including her home, her family and her best friend, MacBethad, to travel to Scone with her fiancé and oversee her soon-to-be kingdom. But deadly fighting breaks out and Gruoch is on the run from Duncan and leaving Scone behind. Her only option is to slip quietly into the shadows or seek vengeance and plot to take the title that she was promised. She welcomes King Duncan warmly even though she is planning his murder. She also advises Macbeth to be two-faced.
