We need the Holy Spirit to provide joy and peace in our lives. He will fill us with an inexpressible delight that can never be taken away. (Romans 14:17) We all have times when we feel weak and don’t know what to do. The Holy Spirit helps us align with God’s will by interceding for us during those times.

Furthermore, the Holy Spirit is our ultimate disciple-maker. It empowers us to make disciples of all nations, teaching them to obey everything that Jesus has commanded (Matthew 28:19-20). The Holy Spirit equips us with the words to speak and the boldness to share the Gospel with others. It works in the hearts of those we disciple, bringing about transformation and growth. Reason 10: Fruitfulness and Growth Second, the Holy Spirit is one both with the Father and with the Son. In theological terms, we say that He is both co-equal and co-eternal. When we read the whole Upper Room Discourse, we discover that it was both the Father and the Son who would send the Spirit (John 14:16; 16:7), and the Spirit came and acted, as it were, for both of Them. So the activity of the Spirit is never given to us in Scripture in isolation from the person and work of Christ or in isolation from the eternal will of the Father. Any endeavor to think of the Spirit in terms that are entirely mystical and divorced from Scripture will take us down all kinds of side streets and eventually to dead ends. 3. The Holy Spirit was the agent of creation. We need the fruit of the Spirit. In Galatians 5:22-23 Paul lists many character traits, and he calls them "the fruit of the Spirit": "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law." I need God's Spirit to produce in me (the meaning of "fruit") these character traits. My hard work and self-discipline will not ultimately produce the "love" I need and the "joy" I desire. God must do that. My efforts position me to receive his Spirit, but ultimately it is his Spirit that does it. This means that while sometimes my hard work will see his Spirit work in me progressively (the normal occurrence), there are times when God's Spirit will work instantaneously in me to produce new character and fruit that all my hard work could never accomplish. These gifts include the ability to prophesy, speak in tongues, interpret tongues, teach, encourage, serve, show mercy, and more. Each gift is essential and serves a specific purpose within the body of believers. The Holy Spirit empowers us to use our gifts for the edification of others, bringing glory to God.We need the Holy Spirit for prayer. He will help us pray according to God’s will and give us the words to say. (Ephesians 6:18) God the Father’s plan, announced in the Old Testament, was to pour out his Spirit on all flesh (Joel 2). In the fullness of time, the Spirit came forth into the history of salvation (Luke 24:49, Acts 2, Gal. 4:6, John 14:26), manifesting the truth that he had always existed as the one who is breathed forth by the Father within the divine life. You may have heard that it is only the Eastern Orthodox churches that affirm this, but in fact the churches of the Western traditions agree about the fundamental point: “The Father is called the one from whom . . . the Holy Spirit principally proceeds,” as Augustine said. The Father-Spirit connection is something that should always come to mind when thinking of the Holy Spirit. It expresses the tremendous depth and intimacy with which the Spirit lives in the heart of God, and this, in turn, resonates with the Spirit’s deep dwelling in the heart of believers. 4. The Holy Spirit is also from the Son. For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God …”(Ephesians 2:8). The Christian life consists of a battle against enemies that we can conquer only by means of the Spirit as our supernatural ally. When Christ engaged in direct combat with the Devil in the wilderness, Jesus did so as a man “full of the Holy Ghost” (Luke 4:1). Our great offensive weapon in the battle against the unseen powers of darkness is “the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (Eph. 6:17), the same weapon Christ used. The only way for us to make effective use of the armor of God is by “praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit” (Eph. 6:18). Though this world is full of evil spirits that would draw us away from Christ, John wrote, “Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world” (1 John 4:4). 9. To know the Spirit is to feel our dependence.

When I contemplate this truth, I feel nothing but wonder and awe at God’s greatness- and I feel the heavy reality of how sacred life really is. The breath of life, in us, comes from the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is our guide, leading us in all truth and helping us to discern God’s will for our lives (John 16:13). As we submit to His guidance, He directs our steps and helps us make decisions that align with God’s plan and purpose for us (Proverbs 3:5-6).
