One realises while reading Holland’s book just how much an emperor’s record was determined by the circumstances he inherited. He is a sensitive person who doesn't like animal death or other scary elements, but we were able to navigate this book together by me reading alongside him. An open solution is perfect to keep your books and photos on display or to decorate with houseplants. It begins with an act of betrayal as the boy's father forces him to abandon the fox and compellingly describes the two friends' struggle to find each other and make things right. That's why we've added a new "Diverse Representations" section to our reviews that will be rolling out on an ongoing basis.

The emperor Trajan, who ruled from 98 to 117 and took Rome’s territory to its greatest recorded extent, certainly felt the tension between maintaining control and satisfying the innate Roman desire for conquest, as became evident in his invasion of Parthia in his final years. In the meantime, Pax befriends several foxes in the wild, including Gray, the head male in the area, and Bristle, the young vixen who is fiercely protective of her younger brother, Runt. While divided into two distinct parts, ‘War’ and ‘Peace’, Pax is a subtle and often solemn book, concerned with the mechanics of ruling an empire and the consequences of that process for places such as Judaea. According to the later Historia Augusta (an entertaining yet notoriously unreliable source), Trajan ungratefully wrote Domitian off as “a terrible emperor, but one who had excellent friends”.

Peter's on a hero's journey that takes him from bullied victim forced to betray his best friend to a mature, determined human who takes responsibility for the damage he's done, and he struggles and sacrifices to protect his loved ones. Along the way they encounter bad people and deadly forces but also kind souls, from the foxes who befriend Pax to the recluse who takes injured Peter in and teaches him skills and life lessons to the young soldier who misses his own dog. Prot states that he possesses at least rudimentary conversational knowledge of most human languages as well as the languages of animals, including whale song and the apparent gibberish of some schizophrenic patients.Reviewer Michael Berry wrote "There aren't many possible denouements for a book like this, and Brewer steers a middle course between the extremes of outright fantasy and predictable mundaneness. But the story, set in a nameless country, also offers strong positive messages about knowing yourself, doing what you know to be right, and doing your best to fix things if you've done wrong. You may also opt to downgrade to Standard Digital, a robust journalistic offering that fulfils many user’s needs.

There’s a real extravagance to his prose, a love of concessive clauses and dramatic yet unpretentious words – “gawped”, “nagged”, “stupefied” – that will delight his long-term readers.

By choosing glass doors in the open section, you can place things you want to both display and protect. Trajan could nevertheless claim to have upheld the Pax Romana, thanks to his earlier work in Dacia (present-day Romania), which inspired many of the scenes on the Column at the centre of the Forum that both bear his name today.

Place it in the hallway, under the window or use it to unload serving dishes next to your dining table. The eruption of a rebellion in Mesopotamia prevented him from fully transforming the territory into a Roman province; he died shortly afterwards. Sara Pennypacker has published 19 books, including Pax (2016), Summer of the Gypsy Moths, as well as the bestselling Clementine and Stuart series. While his focus is global, admirers of Rubicon will be pleased to find that, 20 years on, Holland also remains alive to the nastiness and sexual irrepressibility of Rome’s leaders. Premium Digital includes access to our premier business column, Lex, as well as 15 curated newsletters covering key business themes with original, in-depth reporting. Peter, whose mother died in a car accident years earlier, is terrified that he'll grow up rage-driven like his father; he's tormented by the memory of how his actions contributed to a baby rabbit's death long ago.
