This is my second book by this author and I loved everything about it! How have I missed this amazing talent? The copy I just finished is a loan from the Library, dog-eared, tattered with yellow, crinkling paper held together by tape! The printing date is May 1983! But this one is timeless and I would never have known it’s age if I hadn’t looked! Where have I been not to have read some of her books? To think I could have missed this wonderful gift if my GR friend Jill had not recommended her Morning Glory! There is plenty for the plot junkie – Carrera is pummelled by events – but what makes the book special is that The Hummingbird is such an intelligent meditation on life, family, the human heart and the “dictatorship of pain” that comes with grief. I was reminded of how very much I used to enjoy the kinds of writers who have you underlining passages or making notes in the margin – not just about the book itself, but about your own thoughts on, say, friendship, or lust, or loss. I’m thinking of my early adventures as a reader with Milan Kundera or Umberto Eco, though Veronesi has a very different atmosphere: more tender, more emotionally exasperated, less sure and continually at home to Rudyard Kipling’s “six honest serving men … What and Why and When and How and Where and Who.”

This book has been languishing on my TBR since 2015. Thankfully a new book club I just joined had selected it for their December read. At the same time, Deborahs primary patient is Barclay Reed, a retired history professor and expert in the Pacific Theater of World War II whose career ended in academic scandal. Alone in the world, the embittered professor is dying. As Barclay begrudgingly comes to trust Deborah, he tells her stories from that long-ago war, which help her find a way to help her husband battle his demons. I have to admit I was curious to see what Kiernan would do with the fictional The Hummingbird. I am truly in awe of the book and the man.

The 9:50 R.M.R. is late and the entire town of Stuart’s Junction, Colorado is anxious to know why. We soon learn we have a foiled robbery leaving the bandit seriously injured and the gentleman rescuer with a minor injury. The immediate dilemma is who will volunteer to help with their care. Of course, Abigail, being short on funds and rising to the occasion, volunteers and as soon as her patients are removed to her home, I didn’t want to put this one down.

You'll be torn between lingering on one amazing image and flipping ahead to see what's next. . . . A riveting read that does more than adequate justice to its subjects."—David Callahan, BirdLife Magazine I loved the book even more the 3rd time. I had to give the book another star- definitely more of a 5 star read for me then a 4 star read. I found that I really liked Jesse even more this re-read, if that was even possible. And, I loved Abigails lesson in the book which was that sometimes what you think you need and what you actually need can be two entirely different things. Still an amazing book!! Lavyrle needs to come out of retirement!!!!!

Jesse is a hero I love because he brings out the very best, and worst, of Abigail. He encourages her to be herself and not what her parents and the town expects her to be. Her gradual liberation is so good to see.

It was one of my childhood delights and one of the few memories I hold for my own self, not a memory that was planted from photos or someone else's story that I absconded with. Pastebėjau, kad mano asmenine tendencija tampa ypatingai ryškus, stiprios moters balsas literatūroje. Ir silpnu, jautriu pasirodyti nebijančio vyro, kuris beprotiškai sugraudina, išpažintis. I generally will not read morbidly depressing stories, regardless of their literary merit. Thus, I was hesitant about reading The Hummingbird as the subject matter of the book alternated between Hospice care and the rehabilitation of an Iraqi war veteran severely damaged emotionally during his third deployment. However, this book surprised me in the very best of ways. This was a fascinating novel. I just loved it. Yes, the story was about death and the cruelties of war, but it was so well done, and despite the subject matter, was one of the most hopeful and inspiring stories that I have read in a very long time.

Protecting the Planet: The Season of Giraffes

ascoltavano la struggente versione di Sacrifice cantata da Sinéad O’Connor – and it’s no sacrifice / just a simple word / it’s two hearts living / in two separate worlds –, nell’illusione, così sacrificandosi, di non far nulla di male, non tradire nessuno, non distruggere nulla. I love reading middle grade novels. As a reading teacher, I make it a practice to read through the Sequoyah reading list. One of the reasons I love doing this is because it exposes me to a large variety of literature, and keeps me from reading from the same diet of books.

This is a story of someone who is dying from a horrible disease and the caretaker whose job it is to stay with him until he passes. It is the story of healing during the dying process as well as a story of learning and growing right up until the end. It is a story about how those at the end of their path still have the ability to teach those who are not. Olive, along with her newfound friend, are taken by the town legend of the Hummingbird and make the decision to find it and making one of them its next focus for granting a wish. Through a few twists and turns, this dynamic duo is joined by Olive's step-brother in their quest. The Hummingbird is narrated in first person by Deborah Birch, a hospice nurse with years of experience caring for and standing by her patients as they leave the world. I believe it takes a special kind of person to do a job like that over and over again without spiraling into either depression or indifference. Instead, Deborah takes something personal and positive from the death of each of her patients. There were times I felt she might actually be a little too good to be true but in the end, I was ok with that.

An awesome . . . book with truly spectacular photos of a wide variety of the world’s hummingbirds. . . . All 101 genera are pictured in this book, thus showcasing beautiful photos of a representative cross-section of the world’s hummers. Superb images of hummingbirds aside, the text is also fascinatingly informative, covering a wide range of topics about these special, unique birds."—Chris Lotz, Birding Ecotours
