Description

The aroma, fresh and floral, is more akin to a delicate fruit brandy than a sweet liqueur, and that follows through in your mouth with its gentle lo-fi sweetness, balanced by the pleasantly bitter bite from the whole crushed, macerated and fermented marasca cherries procured from Croatia. Legacy of Excellence: Luxardo, with its vast orchards boasting over 30,000 exclusive Marasca cherry trees, continues to uphold its reputation through this liqueur. It's a popular ingredient in the bar and essential in a number of drink recipes, particularly classic cocktails.

This distillate, combined with a simple syrup, culminates in this revered liqueur with an ABV of 32%.It’s made with the same old-school production method as all the company’s fruit distillates, with a three- to five-day maceration of the marasca cherries sourced from Croatia, then is distilled in an alembic pot still. Taste them after a week or two to see if they are right for you - the longer you leave them, the richer and darker your syrup and the more infused with flavour the cherries will become. In 1759, Francesco Drioli, a Venetian merchant, began industrial-scale production of maraschino in Zadar, Croatia, which was then part of the Republic of Venice. On this point see: Marijan Maroja, Sumarni inventar Tvornica maraskina Francesco Drioli Zara (1768–1944), cit. The Second World War, the persecution of the Tito partisans against the Italian community (some of the Luxardo family, including Pietro and Nicolò Luxardo, were killed by partisans [11]), the bombing of Zadar and its transition to Yugoslav sovereignty, marked the end of an era.

Maraschino has been a popular liqueur in the Dalmatia region of modern-day Croatia since medieval times. As the reputation of Maraschino grew, so did the name of Zadar, which prompted other factories to emerge and become established, particularly those of Girolamo Luxardo (1821) and Romano Vlahov (1861).

It mixes well with a variety of flavors, from fruits to anise, and pairs well with nearly any liquor (brandy, gin, rum, and whiskey are most common). A vital ingredient if you're making an Aviation Cocktail, or one of our absolute favourites – The Last Word.Historic Presentation: Each bottle is encased in its iconic straw jacket, a homage to early Maraschino bottles from Zara. In 1821, Venetian merchant Girolama Luxardo opened a distillery in Zadar and started producing Luxardo Maraschino Originale. marasca), which grows wild along parts of the Dalmatian coast in Croatia, lends the liqueur its unique aroma. While the company has been making fruit liqueurs in Dijon, France, since 1874, the maraschino was added to the lineup only fairly recently, in 2001. These delightful alcohol-infused cherries quickly became popular in Europe and the United States, where they were eaten as a delicacy and increasingly used as garnishes in the early days of the cocktail scene.
