Owen was born and educated in Forest Gate. He is now a Financial Times journalist, living in Walthamstow with his wife and two young sons. The 1863 Ordnance Survey map published 1873 (see below) shows the narrow and wide Chestnut Avenue, more or less on the current alignment, but with no housing development. Our agency will not progress an application until the holding deposit has been paid and an application form is completed and returned by the applicant(s). To avoid unnecessary delays, it’s important that you return your application form(s) within 48 hours. You can also see Angell Pond at the junction of Capel and Woodford Roads, developed by West Ham council engineer Lewis Angell to assist drainage on the Flats, which were very boggy. A bandstand soon appeared too demolished in the 1950s. This story, set within a wider narrative of the campaign to preserve the London commons, is told in Mark Gorman’s new book Saving the People’s Forest: Open spaces, enclosure and popular protest in mid-Victorian London. The focus here is not on the metropolitan upper middle-class campaigners, but instead on the grass roots movement whose popular protests would steer the campaign towards its successful conclusion. This campaign and other contests described in the book contributed significantly to the birth of what has become the modern-day “right to roam”.

Stratford had a wholesale fruit and vegetable market developed by the railway company in Burford Rd. She was a long-standing doctrinal fascist, having joined the Fascisti, a forerunner to Mosley'e British Union of Fascists (BUF) in the 1920's. She, and her brother, Richard Alveston Bullivant, were active early organisers of the fascists in Forest Gate and established its bookshop/headquarters, just around the corner from their house, at 18 Woodford Road. The census collection is designed so that each group of postcodes should contain at least 100 people (50 in Scotland). For Scotland, 2011 data is shown (update coming soon, the Scottish census was delayed by a year unlike the rest of the UK). The latest in Peter and Mark’s series of half a dozen books on the history of Wanstead Flats, and tells the story of cattle grazing locally, and the colourful characters involved.Peter has complemented his own knowledge by accessing the increasingly digitised national newspapers' collection - which can be found here- and has added extracts from this that refer specifically to the roads he features. The reproduction isn't always clear, so we have transcribed sections of them. This is the third in an occasional series of articl es by local historian, Peter Williams, who specialises in Newham housing, maps and local history. In each he looks, in detail, at the history of particular streets in Forest Gate.

In 1923 he converted and reinvented himself as one of the most celebrated Catholic writers in the English-speaking world, with nine books to his name. Widely respected for his knowledge, passion and insight, he worked alongside Bertrand Russell and counted G.K. Chesterton among his friends. There were a number of these kind of societies in East London at the time, they were often known as Four Per Cent Societies. They were privately funded by non- exploitative investors/landlords, who wanted to build decent housing for working people, and in exchange were guaranteed a four per cent return on their capital - paid for from the rents. We use data provided by HM Land Registry (Price Paid Data: transactions received from 1 January 1995 to 27 June 2022 and the UK House Price May-2022 Index). We also use data from the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government (EPC data to 31 March 2022). As these data sources are not provided to us in real-time there will be a delay before information is displayed / updated. Chestnut Avenue achieved a less welcome footnote to history between the two World Wars. It was the home of Millicent "Scat" Bullivant, a leading light in East London fascism.
