Moonage Soundscapes - in this program, Brett Morgen and recording mixers Davi Giammarco and Paul Massey discuss the construction of the soundscapes for Moonage Daydream. Chief among its omissions is mention of Bowie’s cocaine addiction during much of his (unhappy, according to the documentary) time living in Los Angeles during the 1970s, which peaked with a moment in 1976 when he was photographed waving to a crowd at Victoria Station in London in what appeared to be a Nazi salute. It's Bowie who narrates this story, who informs the thrust of the piece, and whose voice is magnified up large - he's the propulsive force which gives Morgen his muse. The film is guided by David Bowie’s own narration and is the first officially sanctioned film on the artist.

First, Bowie was an introverted person who sought solace because it stimulated his mind and too much of what he did when the cameras were not around remained veiled in secrecy. Morgen essentially discards the arguably career-best material that Bowie put out in the 2000s, including the incredible “Heathen” album and the elegiac record “Blackstar,” released mere days before Bowie’s death.

I'm also the author of two self-published books, "The Camp: Stories from the Summer" and "The College: Stories from King's. It’s not satisfying as a concert film and thus not particularly suited for rewatching, because there are no complete performances included that one might long to hear again. These animated bits infuse the documentary with a surreal, fantastical air, befitting an artist who often gave off a humanoid vibe even at his most soulful. It is why a great deal of mystique developed around him and a lot of people became fascinated by it. capturing the subject during different stages of his career, also detailing a growing comfort with the process of promotion. Familiar songs are frequently excerpted and layered atop one another, creating sounds that are simultaneous familiar and new. Throughout the movie’s 2 hour runtime, Bowie talks about almost everything: music, art, life, mental health and a slew of other topics. But here's the thing with Moonage Daydream: it has access to millions of hours of footage from the Bowie estate and probably ends up being the closest film to get to the enigma that is Bowie, with concert scenes, key musical interludes (Heroes provides one of the film's goosebump moments) and intimate access to his paintings that were never really put on display for the world to see.Products labelled '*item fulfilled by Exertis on behalf of hmv' will be supplied to you directly by Exertis via their approved couriers. Indeed, whether intentionally or not, the film very quickly creates the impression that its style is as important as its subject matter. Bowie’s orchestration of that final work, written and recorded in the shadow of his mortality, exploring the big questions of existence and intentionally timed for release just before his passing of a cancer he kept secret from the world, is a subject worthy of its own film.
