Description

Readers should still be able to determine the validity and reliability within quantitative research. Once the above terms have been understood then it should be possible to determine if the research can be generalised, that is transferable to other situations/locations. Additionally, nursing journals have different expectations regarding how much should be included regarding the validity and reliability of research. Aveyard, H. Goodman,M. Mould, P. (2017) Nursing research an introduction. 3rd ed. London: Sage publications.

Challenges faced by nurses in using pain assessment scale in patients unable to communicate: a qualitative study. (2018). Lovin, R. (2017) Study of Nurses’ Attitudes and Practices towards Pain Evaluation in Nonverbal Patients. Montview Liberty University Journal of Undergraduate Research [online]. 3(1), pp.1-34. [Accessed 19/02/2019]. Available at: https://digitalcommons.liberty.edu/montview/vol3/iss1/4/ This study found that the result was similar to previous research carried out by Rose et al. (2012), in which there were three common barriers to pain assessment and management in general. Most nurses who participated in the study not only use tools for the pain assessment of non-verbal patients but use them often and consider it important that they are used in practice. Question you want to ask of the literature: How effective is the management and assessment of pain in the hospital setting for adults in the intensive care unit setting. The majority of research is never published even though it may have the potential to make a valuable contribution to the development of nursing knowledge. Caution should still be exercised as to whether published research is repetitive of previous research or conducted well - hence the reason for a critiquing framework - and adds to the body of nursing knowledge. What are the critiquing frameworks for qualitative research trying to do?

The identification of themes is important when reviewing findings of a qualitative research expert because themes: allow description of a large quantity of data in a condensed format. Which of these titles of a research report indicates the study is qualitative, rather than quantitative?. A quantitative research design aims to provide numerical, statistical information that can show patterns or comparable variations(Holland and Rees, 2010; Ellis, 2013). Parahoo (2014)describes survey as; a research design which aims to gather descriptive, correlational data usually from large populations and by questionnaires, interviews and to a lesser extent observation. According toLoBiondo-Wood and Haber (2014)surveys have their advantages and disadvantages. The advantage of a survey is a lot of information can be gathered from a large population in an economical manner, also survey research can be surprisingly accurate. A disadvantage of carrying out a survey is the breadth rather than the depth of the information is emphasized. Were all the participants who entered the trial accounted for at its conclusion? Some participants who entered the research trial may not be included in the data analysis at the end of the trial. There may be various reasons for this, but the data analysis should reflect all the participants (even those who may have died as an indirect result of their hypertension).

You should complete the final version of this table at the end of the search once you are completely happy with it and are confident that you have an appropriate number of relevant results. When reading reports in published journals and then critiquing the reports readers should bear in mind several points. First, the research report in a professional journal is likely to be much shorter than the researcher’s original paper. This is because of the restricted word allowances of professional journals. Many health journals restrict their research reports to between 3,000 and 5,000 words whereas some research papers may be around 10,000 words long, and those submitted for a higher degree may be up to 100,000 words. It is clear therefore that not every topic can be covered in a journal’s report. Readers should be careful before boldly stating that the researcher did not consider a certain aspect, because it may have had full coverage in the original (unpublished) research report. Readers would do well to look at the author guidelines of professional journals and then relate this to the critiquing framework outlined above. The first paper the writer critically appraised was Tacia et al (2015). This research paper identified 6 main barriers which was highlighted within the 3 focus groups that where used. The writer feels that they were well explained. Tacia et al (2015) research identifies the understanding of EBP and what the challenges where when nurses tried to implement EBP, however along with this there is also suggestions of how this could be improved.

Why are themes important results for a qualitative study?

Leach, M. J. (2006). Evidence‐based practice: A framework for clinical practice and research design. International Journal of Nursing Practice Vol.12 pp. 248-251. The CriticalAppraisal Skills Programme (CASP) tool helps people evaluate research papers in healthcare. It uses a step-by-step approach and asks questions about things like how the study was done and what the results mean. By using CASP, you can figure out if a study is reliable and can be used to make decisions. This element involves identifying an alternative or comparison intervention, if applicable. It could be a different drug, therapy, placebo, standard treatment, or any other relevant comparison.

Each week Nursing Times publishes a guided learning article with reflection points to help you with your CPD. After reading the article you should be able to: As well as being a large component of your assignment or dissertation, systematic searches of this kind... Clearly linked to the NMC proficiencies on evidence-based practice so students can be assured they are learning the skills they really need. There are a variety of methods of data collection in qualitative research, including observations, textual or visual analysis (eg from books or videos) and interviews (individual or group). However, the most common methods used, particularly in healthcare research, are interviews and focus groups. Why does PICO have a gun? Were all important outcomes considered so the results can be applied? If quantitative research results are to be applied to other similar populations, then all the outcomes of the research should be reported and understood, not just those research outcomes that appear to be either the most significant or most interesting to the researcher. The PRISMA flow chart has different boxes and arrows that connect them. The boxes show the different steps, like finding studies, screening them, and deciding which ones to include or exclude. The arrows show how many studies are involved at each step. The flow chart is important because it helps you show how you chose the studies and if there were any problems or biases in the process. Within quantitative research there are different approaches (methodologies). The example used throughout this series of giving the patient an experimental drug to treat hypertension and then measuring the patient’s blood pressure, may be set up in one of several ways. Researchers may ask GPs to record the patient’s blood pressure, before starting treatment and thereafter every month for a year, as well as recording the patient’s attitudes to taking the medication. This type of research is known as ‘survey research’, although the research may not necessarily take into consideration other factors such as the patient’s diet or exercise regime.
