The only other adaptor I’m aware of is for 16.4oz gas stoves, which allows you to use screw-on canisters: Greyhost gas adapter. Very excited that you might be able to solve my 3-hour slog through the interweb. We have a US stove that is built to use the 16.4oz canisters as shown above. If I follow the link above for the different types of adaptors will the 16.4 adaptor shown allow me to use small UK style screw ones? ( ie ‘regular UK screw on canisters / lindal valve? This would be very exciting (and cost effective!) many thanks! Reply There are only a few manufacturers of [screw thread] canisters world wide, and they manufacture all the different brands. So two different brands often come off the same production line in Korea. Each cylinder holds a different amount of gas, and each regulator has a flow rate, so assuming you burn the gas on full flow, the following table gives a rough guide - but note that is artificial for comparison only.

As you can see from the above table, the Calor 4.5kg and Campingaz R907 last a similar amount of time, despite the Campingaz holding less gas. Your Campingaz cylinder should come with a carry handle that screws into the fitting where the cylinder goes. This not only makes the gas cylinder easier to carry but protects the fitting at the same time. If you're looking at buying gas cylinders in the UK, you'll notice some are blue (butane) and some a red (propane). But what's the difference between butane and propane? So a refill doesn't happen whilst you wait. Your cylinder is just swapped for one that's already been refilled. For what it’s worth, the aerosol-type canisters were very prevalent on my trip to southern Chile this year — they seem to be associated with the cheaper-looking stoves imported from China and elsewhere. I also noticed folks putting mini-blowtorches on top of them to toast their bread! Reply If you typically camp with a mains electric hookup then it might be worth splashing out for an induction hob. Our favourite is the Aobosi Dual Induction Hob which can boil two pints of water in about 3 minutes – this is up there with some of the best kettles. The adaptors allow screw-on stoves to use other types of canister (clip-on, aerosol and puncture). They don’t work the other way around i.e. they don’t let you use screw-on canisters with other types of stove. Finally, the stove set up (e.g. stove model, windshield, heat reflector, heat exchangers on the pots) is a much bigger factor than the canister type. Dutch camping experts Cadac may not be well known over here (yet), but, but this dual burner stove is one of the most versatile we’ve seen. The Cadac 2 Cook 2 Pro Deluxe QR might be a mouthful to say, but this tabletop design has two Piezo ignition-controlled gas burners, and despite the relatively compact 57 x 32 x 10cm (LWD) dimensions has plenty of space for two large pots.

When gas canisters (which actually contain liquid, not gas) get cold, the liquid sinks to the bottom of the canister. You can test this by shaking the canister or warming it up (e.g. with your hands or down your top) before you use it. If it burns better after you’ve done those things, even if only briefly, then it’s probably the cold. The 400CV is a great BBQ and in some ways better than the Cadac. Yes we said it! For instance the lid has an in-built thermometer which allows you to set your cooking temperature accurately. The piezo ignition worked flawlessly on our test unit, and we liked the convenience of the gas can being underneath the BBQ rather than to the side (which is also available on the high pressure version of the Cadac). For a few pounds/dollars, you can buy small adaptors for your stove that will allow you to use different types of canisters. They only weigh a few grams/ounces but can be really useful when travelling abroad. They can save you money too. The Trangia takes about 7-8 minutes to boil 1 litre of water which is more than double the time of the gas burners. You literally just top it up with the alcohol of your choice and seal it shut – these things don’t leak which is great. We’re biking, and I considering trying to sneak the canisters in the bike box.
