Description

While the iron-coreless direct-drive motor with motor control promises absolutely smooth rotational stability, the SL-100C's solid two-layer platter helps mitigate external vibrations. We are assured that the motor still has the famous “Technics torque” and spins the platter free from cogging. As an avid music lover and vinyl enthusiast, I’ve had the pleasure (and sometimes, the frustration) of testing and enjoying a wide array of turntables over the years. From vintage record players that resonate with sweet nostalgia to sleek, modern systems that astound with their technological prowess, my journey in the world of vinyl has been marked by the constant pursuit of that perfect sound.

Then there are the vinyl newbies, who panic when they realise they will have to fit the turntable onto the body of the record player, loop a length of rubber from the drive to the turntable, then balance the tone arm with a baffling combination of written charts, counterbalance weights and dials. You’ll find the device’s pace adaptability and verification methods intriguing, offering a dynamic user experience. This is coupled with a coreless, D.C. motor that’s not run-of-the-mill, but direct drive. The components of this motor stand as a testament to Technics’ dedication to quality and performance.Otherwise, you get all of what the more costly SL1200 G series ‘tables give you—at least in terms of features and accessories: a coreless, direct drive D.C. motor, the magnet for which is integrated into a well-damped die-cast aluminum platter with heavy rubber mat, a 230mm effective length “S” shaped aluminum pipe arm with detachable head shell, dustcover, tonearm cables, and accessories. I should probably start with the engine. But, first, and not to repeat the manufacturer’s convoluted definitions, I will limit myself to saying that it is a single-rotor, direct-drive coreless motor, which has already been used in the SL-1200GR. And at this point, it ensures that the platter rotates evenly, reducing resonance to a minimum. The design of the SL-100C is both sleek and durable, reflecting Technics’ long-standing commitment to quality. It feels solid and well-built, with its aluminum die-cast platter and dust cover exuding a sense of reliability. Skeptics and naysayers credited Adele and Taylor Swift for that year’s boost but each year since, and without a “big” record, sales continued growing until in 2021, unit sales, not just dollar sales surpassed those of CDs. Vinyl was victorious. Anyhow, the recent iterations of the SP-10 and SL-1200 are wonderful to my ears/eyes because I have always secretly loved direct drive, even when Corey Greenburg and John Atkinson were preaching PRaT and Linns and Regas in the vinyl dark ages of the 90s.

and we appreciate the patience! While I cannot say exactly what's in the product review pipeline as of yet, I can say there are at least three of them in the works that I'm currently monitoring, and we'll post them as soon as they're done and vetted -- with many more to come, of course. And we'll continue to regularly report on new products worthy of our, and your, attention. The arm is the familiar static-balanced, universal S-shaped design using the same gimbal suspension construction and machined housing found in the SL-1200.Further, there is so little lost (except frills) on the 1500c that it's re-written my opinion of the company ,who I now think don't do hype, they just make an honest, excellent product at each price level. Given its premium features and high sound quality, the SL-100C is best suited for severe vinyl enthusiasts prioritizing sound quality over price. It’s not the best choice for casual listeners or those on a tight budget. Conclusion However, what made the whole experience a lot better than some record player assemblage projects I've been involved in is that once the parts were correctly assembled, there were no further hassles. I plonked it on a sideboard next to a Cambridge Audio Alva Solo phono pre-amp and… that was it. It sounded great straight away and there was no discernible electrical hum. Counterbalancing and setting the anti-skating control for the tonearm was also not exactly enjoyable, but it didn't drive me to drink either.

Technics has taken the blueprint of its popular SL-1500C turntable, streamlined some areas but kept the core features and unveiled a new entry level Hi-Fi turntable to win over a new generation of fans - it's the SL-100C. The SL-100C keeps the key performance attributes of the SL-1500C to reach a wider audience and is a welcome addition to the Technics Premium Class.” Take what I say with a grain of salt, because I grew up lusting after 70s/80s Technics gear that my Dad had, or which I saw in catalogs. Around 1990 they seem to have lost their mojo and "gone Hollywood" (aka concentrating on home theater). By the end, the company was a joke -- save for the 1200 and pianos. Many components are responsible for the sound of a turntable, be it a decoupled chassis, a shielded power supply, a quiet and evenly running motor, plus sound-absorbing insulators. All are included with the SL-100C.Even the slightest fluctuation in speed can ruin the overall music experience. In terms of accuracy, I found it to be spot-on; it didn’t falter and was impressively stable. Technics couldn’t have better timed its 2015 re-entry into the audio enthusiast turntable market. Interest in vinyl took off that year, growing 30% from around 9 million sold in 2014 to 12 million in 2015.
