Cucoloris (“cookie”) — A type of flag with shapes cut into it that creates the look of tree branches, window shades, etc. To Gordy, the greatest movies of all time are mostly testosterone soaked 80s/90s action flicks and thrillers, but with this being Ayoade and all there is still plenty of love for View From the Top. Finally, brilliant critical appraisals of such luminous cinematic masterworks as Road House and Time Cop allow us to see -- as if through mist -- just how movies work and how critics have been fooled into valuing such comparatively mediocre and lame effusions as Citizen Kane, The Seventh Seal or It's a Wonderful Life -- none of which, Gordy LaShare show us, match up to the high watermark of the great Seagal, Van Damme, Norris, Swayze and Statham achievements. The cool thing about being a Grip for film is that it’s the kind of job where you can easily learn everything as you go, and you’ll learn it very quickly.

Examples of simple rigs include the menace arm, which allows a light to be boomed over set using one stand, or goalposts that span over top of set using two stands. One of the reasons The Avengers is among the highest-grossing films of all time is that it’s filled with people who act for a living. But there is one thing that will definitely endear you to the crew, even on your first day: knowing how to properly wrap cable. It is rigid insulation made for the construction trade, but was adopted by the film trade because of its "true-white" color and "soft" bounce.

Ayoade pops in from time to time to give notes to Gordy and to re-enact scenes from Steven Segal movies (his tough-guy action star voice is SO good). You’re going to be on your feet about 90% of the day, so your work shoes need to be sturdy but lightweight. Essentially one joke played out over a few hundred pages, the book quickly outstays its welcome with insufficient humour to counteract the effort required to read it.

This video will show you the proper technique, but you’ll still need to take the initiative and practice, practice, practice. Now living in LA and holding forth on movies to anyone who'll listen, Gordy has tried to put his many failed marriages behind him. Gobo – A commonly used acronym for "Go Between", "Go BlackOut" or "Goes Before Optics", it is a dark plate, screen or partial screen placed in front of a lighting source to shield a lens and control the shape of emitted light. Actually, the humour has dated somewhat due to the MeToo movement uncovering appalling abusive behaviour endemic in Hollywood. One of the most common pieces of equipment on a film set, it can hold a variety of reflectors, lights, show cards or boom microphones. That’s why every Aaron Sorkin hero walks fast along corridors, while people with clipboards run to keep up with him.
