Description

The all-new Wavo PRO is an unequaled, innovative shotgun microphone built for storytellers, filmmakers and expert creators on the go. The premium mic is equipped with an intelligent hybrid analog/digital system to power onboard active noise reduction, a sound management app, and integrated second 3.5mm mic input. Designed to pair with the latest in mirrorless camera hardware to bring broadcast-caliber audio to JOBY’s dynamic audience, Wavo PRO’s features include: The Blue Yeti is one of the more common hobbyist microphones, despite being somewhat old and disliked by professionals, and makes for a good benchmark for a microphone in the Wavo Pod’s price range. Its standalone design offers higher quality and control than you’ll find in a headset microphone and especially webcam microphones, and it’s able to capture a wider range of vocals than you might be used to if you’ve never used a USB microphone before. You’ll get less echo when speaking from a distance, more sultry tones when speaking up close, better recreation of instruments and of course your own voice and could possibly even include multiple speakers more easily. That the Wavo Pod can match its audio quality is a good sign.

The built in ANR (Active Noise Reduction) algorithm removes self-generated structural noise in real time, making sure you get the cleanest audio possible directly into your camera while shooting on the go. The mid-range Wavo PRO DS is the perfect companion for creators looking for a solid upgrade. The shotgun microphone shares most of the pro-grade components of the flagship Wavo PRO, but is designed to deliver high-quality audio with a more streamlined user experience. Wavo PRO DS features include: A simple dedicated digital sound management app for iOS and Android, that connects via Bluetooth to Wavo PRO to provide creators real- time and remote visual monitoring of sound It allows you to capture high-quality audio while recording video. This is crucial for creating engaging and professional-looking content, whether you're vlogging, creating online courses, or filming interviews. Also, while the multi-use knob does save space, it also makes it hard to know which function you’re adjusting until you memorize the colors associated with each. Ultimately, this is a minor problem, but it does make the microphone more daunting out of the box. JOBY - the reference brand for content creator gear - is releasing a new lineup of flagship audio mics for pro, on-the-go and desktop creators and streamers. JOBY creators know that it’s not enough to have great lighting and stability; audio is 50% of the perfect content equation! The new release includes five new additions to the WavoTM line, led by all-new flagships Wavo PRO and Wavo AIR. With the beloved GorillaPodTM and BeamoTM lighting lines, JOBY’s debut in audio capture is the last piece of the puzzle for a one-stop-shop for content creation gear, be it video stability, lighting, and now, pro-grade audio. Compatibility: Ensure that the microphone is compatible with your camera or recording device. Some microphones require specific adapters or connectors to work with certain devices.

Sadly, the metal pop filter that supplied really doesn't add any value. This mesh-like grille clips onto the front of the mic, and during my tests I really couldn't hear any difference to the sound performance of the mic. I regularly use a pop filter for voiceover recordings, but the Joby accessory didn't prevent pops or sibilant sounds from coming through and making it onto the recording. Joby Wavo Pod review: Verdict

Standing around 9.5-inches high, the Wavo Pod reaches a comfortable height to be level with my mouth on the supplied stand sat on my desktop, but this will obviously be dependent on the height of the table or desk it’s placed on. For the best movability you may prefer to fit it to a desk arm. Despite its rather chunky dimensions and weight at 1.58 pounds, it works fine on my setup but this may be something to consider for your own setup. While the Wavo Pod’s specs do differ in minor areas, such as its slightly smaller Max SPL, its quality was still indistinguishable enough from my Blue Yeti that I had to label my audio recordings to tell the difference between ones recorded with the Wavo Pod and ones recorded with the Blue Yeti. The built-in LEDs notify you of your sound and battery levels in real time, so you can always stay in control of your sound, even in front of the camera. The automatic power mode automatically switches the Wavo PRO ON or OFF in sync with the camera, to fit in with your workflow hassle-free and save time and battery for later. When I push the Blue Yeti’s mute button, it doesn’t show up on the recording at all, but that’s not the case with the Wavo Pod. Instead, pushing in the Wavo Pod’s combination volume knob/mute toggle creates a noticeable “thump” in your recording, similar to when you unplug a guitar from an amp. While not a problem for the occasional one-off muting, this is a huge red flag for anyone who likes to constantly use their hardware mute button in podcasts and other professional settings, like I do. Special Features of Job Wavo Pod Hands-free audio capture with lav mics, including a unique JOBY designed mounting system that goes from magnetic mount lanyard, belt clip or cold shoe mount, to GorillaPod leg clip and many more.

This is likely due to the similar specs that the two microphones have, including a 20 Hz to 20 kHz Frequency response and a 48 kHz sample rate, which isn’t quite as hi-res as the 96 kHz rate found on more expensive mics but is still the recommended resolution for streaming platforms like Twitch, as these platforms limit bandwidth anyway. Generally, the Joby's sound output was okay. Its features draw it closer to the asking price, rather than the more affordable models mentioned above.

The Joby Wavo Pod is an attractive first mic, but there are more affordable options out there

Portability: If you need to carry your microphone around, look for a lightweight and compact option that's easy to transport. Designed for the JOBY Wavo vlogging microphone, the Wavo Windjammer provides outstanding protection for outdoor use in applications such as vlogging, live streaming, Tiktoking and filming. Directionality: Choose a microphone that is appropriate for your needs. If you want to capture sound from a specific direction, such as when interviewing someone, a directional microphone may be best. If you want to capture ambient sounds or a wider range of audio, an omnidirectional microphone may be more suitable. A pro-grade capsule and included foam windscreen creates crisp, warm and true tone audio, and removes vocal plosives or soft wind.

The premium product is the Wavo Pro shotgun mic that looks as though it’s designed to compete with the popular Rode VideoMic Pro series. The shotgun is mounted in a Rycote Lyre (both Joby and Rycote are part of the Vitec/Manfrotto group) and comes with an active noise reduction system that cancels out ‘self-generated structural noise’ coming from the camera movements, a change of grip on the camera and wind noise. The microphone also has a safety channel feature that can set the left channel to 10dBs below the main level. This means that should something louder than expected happen the safety channel will be able to record it while the main channel peaks out. On-camera microphones are an essential tool for content creators, vloggers, and filmmakers who want to produce high-quality videos with clear and crisp audio. In case you are interested in using Wavo with your laptop you can find separately the Wavo USB Adapter that thanks to its plug-and-play solution it easily allows you to plug your microphone and TRS headphones directly into your computer or laptop and you are ready to go.

*Mic Drop* JOBY Debuts New Innovative WavoTM Mics for Pro and Mobile Creators, and Streamers

On-camera microphones can be either directional or omnidirectional. Directional microphones are designed to capture sound from a specific direction, making them ideal for vlogging or recording in noisy environments. Omnidirectional microphones, on the other hand, capture sound from all directions, making them ideal for capturing ambient sounds. Built for storytellers, filmmakers and expert content creators, Wavo PRO is designed to pair with the latest camera hardware and brings broadcast-level audio performance to this dynamic and growing audience. A 2.5m long, high-quality cable made from soft materials, connects to the Wavo Lav PRO for the ultimate interview setup that minimizes transferring vibrations. Two ¼-20 mounts on either side of the mic stand can attach accessories, and position the mic using a GorillaPod or boom arm for any streamer’s customized setup.
