The Canton DM55 soundbase replaces the terrific DM50, offering some new featuresand upgraded audio. It’s the smallest of three models from the German brand, alongside the DM75 and DM100, which are both designed for bigger rooms and TVs.

The beauty of having no HDMI ports is that it simplifies the setup process – just run an optical cable between the TV and soundbase and you’re pretty much good to go. Thanks to both of you fro taking the time to help me with some of my issues, I look forward to any more comments or advice you may have.Battery life is quoted as 10 hours, depending on volume. I’ve no reason to doubt this, but haven’t tested it. In use Bluetooth connection to an iPad The Canton DM55 remains an impeccably built soundbase. The structure is sturdy, and feels even classier than before thanks to that sleek glass top. I figured it might be something to do with HD audio but I am surprised that you can't just connect up a bluray player (as per Canton's own instructions) and it just work - I hooked up a Samsung bluray player last night and it had the same issue (unless I set the output to PCM). Obviously none of this is an issue if using the DM50 in stereo mode, which (as the What Hi-fi review and others have stated) may be preferred anyway. Connection-wise it does all the basics plus a few more with Optical and Coax digital input as well as an analog 2 phono input. It has Bluetooth so you can get your music flowing, but also has a subwoofer output in case you really want to crank that bass up to 11.

Connections on the DM55 remain the same as before: you get two digital inputs (optical and coaxial), a pair of RCA analogue inputs, and a subwoofer output. Another 'fix' was to go to the actual bluray player settings and set the Dolby Digital and DTS to 'downmix PCM' but from what I understand this converts the multi channel into a stereo channel which is less than ideal. Other connections include digital optical and coaxial, Ethernet, sub-out and an analogue line input. For wireless connections there’s Bluetooth (3.0 and aptX) and Wi-Fi (2.4GHz and 5GHz).I saw the speaker at a trade show in September and was impressed – although it’s always difficult to judge in a noisy environment. Canton are entering a busy field of portable Bluetooth speakers, at many different price points. Overview Canton Musicbox XS As well as making your TV sound great, the Canton DM 55 also offers easy Bluetooth music streaming. Using the high quality apt-X Bluetooth codec, you can stream music from your smartphone, tablet or Bluetooth-equipped laptop or desktop computer. Stream your music library or use a music streaming service such as Spotify and enjoy a massive range of music in Canton quality. The Canton Smart 9 isn’t hugely smart, either, with only Chromecast built-in. Everything else is effectively done off-board. What’s more, although I’m not sure about Canton’s quoted 60W output, the output is very impressive before even considering its size. It’s not as loud as the Sonos Play:1 but significantly louder than say the Braven 705. And I couldn’t hear much distortion even approaching full volume.
