It was Marlene Dietrich who got everyone to see the tuxedo in a whole new way. It was during her film “Morocco,” which was released in 1930, that she made waves in the fashion world. In the movie, Dietrich wore a tuxedo and scandalized filmgoers everywhere. She was so ahead of her time, a woman’s tuxedo didn’t appear in pop culture again for 30 years. In 1966, designer Yves Saint Laurent created Le Smoking, a tuxedo exclusively for women. Barrel cuffs don’t require any rolling or cufflinks—instead, they are held closed by buttons. Most of your shirts probably have barrel cuffs. Unlike the typical, casual barrel cuff shirt that buttons shut, our barrel cuff dress shirts have modified buttonholes that can also accommodate cufflinks, bringing them up to tux code. As for the style of the trousers, pleated or plain front is up to you. Plain front appears more minimalist, and emphasizes a slender/athletic body type; pleats help trousers drape nicely, creating more of a vertical line on the front of the leg. Whether you choose plain front or pleated, avoid cuffs which will look too casual. The matching pants have a delightfully tailored fit, with a front pleat to help elongate your legs. Lean into the androgynous aesthetic by styling with the best loafers for women, or add a more party-ready feel by slipping on some stiletto heels.

Tuxedo pants are distinct for the strip of ribbon you will find running down each leg. The ribbon covers the seams of the pants and the ribbon is made with the same material as the lapels. Tuxedo pants usually sit high on the waist, above the belly button. This allows another piece of the outfit, such as a vest or a cummerbund, to fit properly and cover the waistline of the pants completely. According to the other version of the story, tuxedo inventor Griswold Lorillard was the son of the founder of Tuxedo Park. This is how Tuxedo Park ties into this version of events. So how does your new-found “button smarts” help you get dressed? Now that you know the design intent behind button counts, forget it. Really. The easiest way to ensure your pants stay snug is to wear them at the right height. Even better (and something we strongly advocate for) is to have your tuxedo pants custom made. This ensures that a belt is not needed to keep them up as they should fit perfectly around your natural waist. If going custom isn’t an option for you, suspenders will tag in to replace the belt and save the day. Suspenders make for an excellent choice not only functionally, but stylistically so make sure you learn how to wear suspenders the right way.The bowtie and cummerbund (a waistband that goes around your waist and through your legs). The alternative to wearing a cummerbund is overlaying the front of the shirt with fabric, which looks better on guys with flat abs. The third alternative is wearing suspenders, which are for guys with big posteriors to hide behind. What Shoes Should I Wear with a Tux? Though they can seem similar, there are fundamental differences between a tuxedo and a suit. And of course, in the world of customized clothing, there can be a range of tuxedos and suits that don’t meet the “traditional” standard. So, keep in mind that our comparisons below are rooted in the most conventional sense of the two. Tuxedo Fabric Do – Pay attention to your trousers, particularly the belt loops. You don’t see any belt loops? That’s a sign that your style of tux isn’t made with belts in mind.

While traditionally it's all about a two piece, the popularity of the tuxedo has seen an explosion of tuxedo inspired dresses and jumpsuits which offer a softer and more contemporary take on the trend. What shoes to wear with a tuxedo Though some will tell you that belts never go with tuxedos, that’s an assertion that ignores the fact that many wear tuxes for more casual purposes than they used to wear them. And it’s in more casual events that you’ll find the perfect time to wear a belt. If business casual is the dress code, belts can add to the style you want to achieve with your tux. Tuxedos are meant to be worn in a particular way and there are some things that you can’t just get around.

You don’t want to listen to the naysayers. You’re going for the belt, and nobody’s going to stop you. But you still need to choose the right belt to make sure you create a cohesive look, which is where the following advice comes in. Classic Elegance: Why Leather Belts Reign Supreme If perfection is in the details, the belt you wear with your suit is as integral to your overall look as the pattern of your suit fabric or the shoes you choose. Still, belts are often diminished to that strap of leather meant to hold up your pants. In this short primer, we’ll explore the basics of men’s belts in the context of suits, answering some of the most common questions including the purpose of belts, how to properly wear a belt and how to distinguish the quality of your leather belt. A Belt as an Accessory, not a Necessity

Imagine your tux shirt is Scottie Pippen and your expertly-tied bow tie is Michael Jordan. Sure, MJ is arguably the GOAT (greatest of all time), but while everybody’s looking at His Airness they miss Pippen killing it on defense and recording 21 career triple doubles according to Wikipedia! Twenty-one! Just as there are belts that can work with a tux, there are also plenty that detract from the elegant style a tuxedo creates. Big and bulky belts are definitely out, as already mentioned, but you should also be wary of bright colors. Again, the shoe-matching philosophy comes into play here, but even when a bold color matches your shoes, it still detracts from the tuxedo’s style.

A belt should never be worn with a tuxedo. If your tuxedo pants have belt loops on them, then they are not tuxedo pants. If you’re looking for some assistance in holding up your tuxedo pants on the dance floor, then your only option is to wear suspenders—and preferably the traditional button style (also known as braces) over clip-ons. In either case, unless you work as a waiter, the only excuse to wear a tuxedo during the day is if you are going to an evening event or if you have to attend some certain diplomatic functions. …even before evening Christopher Plummer plays Captain Von Trapp in “The Sound of Music” wearing a traditional version of the tuxedo.
